The soft morning sun filtered through a crack in the curtains, warming Ryju's cheek. He rolled over, letting out a long yawn.
"Man… That was the best sleep I've had in ages."
He sat up, rubbing his eyes and stretching his arms above his head. It was peaceful… eerily peaceful. But deep down, he knew that today wasn't going to be like any other.
Not anymore.
Somewhere Else in the Village...
Goro paced in his room, already dressed in his combat gear. His fists clenched and unclenched with nervous energy.
"Today's the day," he muttered under his breath. "The announcement of the final challenge. I can feel it!"
Shun stood in the backyard of his small home, staring up at the clear blue sky.
"Just one more challenge," he whispered. "And then… we'll be real ninjas."
He tightened his headband. There was no room for doubt now.
Rei leaned against the rooftop of her home, her arms crossed and her gaze sharp.
"We've come too far to lose now."
The wind tugged gently at her hair, but she didn't move. Her mind was locked onto the battles to come.
Kenshiro sat in quiet meditation, legs crossed beneath the shade of a lone tree. A ray of sunlight kissed his brow as he opened one eye.
"Everything is falling into place…"
He rose slowly, the wind carrying the faint whisper of steel in the distance.
Kuroyami was already wide awake, sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at the floor with cold focus.
"I'll grow stronger. No matter what."
He stood, grabbing his blade and strapping it to his back.
"Even if it means facing them again."
Meanwhile…
Uzuki strode ahead of his team, jaw clenched, eyes burning with something fierce. His teammates followed closely behind.
"Tch… What the hell is wrong with me today?"
Daigo, cheerful as ever, laughed behind him.
"You mad already, Uzuki?"
Jake groaned. "Does he ever stop talking?"
Hana rolled her eyes. "He really doesn't. Kinda gives me the creeps."
On a Hill Near the Academy
Kenji looked out over the academy grounds, a smirk playing on his lips. His team stood behind him, each of them silently sizing up the competition.
"Let's see what the third challenge has in store…"
Appolo let out a low chuckle. "I just hope it gives me a good story to paint."
Helia grinned. "I wanna go another round with that girl… Rei, was it?"
Behind them, three others stood—each radiating quiet intensity.
Takeshi Hoshizaki cracked his knuckles. "So this is Team One? I'll crush them."
Akari Mizushima smirked. "Let's see them handle my rhythm."
Mika Aoyama nodded calmly. "If we work together, there's nothing we can't beat."
Kenji folded his arms. "Don't forget about Uzuki. He's not someone you can just ignore."
They all turned serious.
"Right."
Inside the Spiritual King's Office
The Spiritual King stood beside a figure cloaked in shadow. His voice was low but firm.
"In one hour, I'll make the announcement."
The figure let out a quiet laugh.
"Heh… Finally getting to the fun part, huh?"
The Spiritual King smirked. "I've been looking forward to it."
Back at Ryju's House
"Ryju! Wake up!" his mom's voice called from the kitchen. "You don't want to be late!"
Ryju had already leapt out of bed. "I'm up!"
His mother, Rika, peeked into his room with a proud smile. "Big day today, huh? Just like your father, your grandfather, and your brother before you."
Ryju scratched his head, blushing a little. "Yeah…"
"Go brush your teeth. I made your favorite."
By the time he returned from the bathroom, Rika tossed him a neatly wrapped sandwich.
"Lucky jelly sandwich," she said with a wink.
"Thanks, Mom! I'll make you proud!"
"I know you will. I'll be in the stands cheering. Go get 'em, my boy."
Outside the Hospital
Azar adjusted his hair, looking toward the academy gates.
Misa glanced down at her own clenched fists. "We're ready. We have to be."
Zanden nodded. "Let's finish this."
Kaien stood silently at the back, but the fire in his eyes spoke volumes.
Taro grinned. "Time to show them what we're made of!"
Jett holding his guns. "Let's go."
Academy Meeting Spot
Ryju waited beneath a tree, scanning the horizon.
"This is where we're supposed to meet… I think I'm the first one here."
A voice came from behind him.
"Looks like you made it after all."
He turned. Kenshiro stood there, arms crossed.
Ryju smirked. "Why do you sound so surprised?"
Kenshiro shrugged. "Didn't expect you to be early, that's all."
"Yo!"
Rei waved, approaching with a confident stride.
"Rei!" Ryju beamed. "You made it."
"Of course. Wouldn't miss it."
Then came Kuroyami, silent as always.
"Hey," Ryju said, nodding to him.
Kuroyami gave a quiet nod. "Yo."
Almost all of us… just waiting on—
"Sorry we're late!"
Shun and Goro came running up the path.
"We ran into each other," Goro said, panting. "Got a little turned around."
Rei raised an eyebrow. "Again?"
"Sorry," Shun laughed.
Ryju crossed his arms. "You guys ready?"
Everyone nodded.
"Then let's go. We've got a final test ahead of us."
"Right!"
Meanwhile…
Uzuki's group stood before the academy gates.
"Let's move," Uzuki ordered.
"Got it," Daigo said cheerfully.
The rest followed without hesitation.
Kenji's group arrived next. His sharp eyes scanned the crowd already gathering.
"Perfect. Everyone's here."
One Minute to Go…
The crowd fell silent as the Spiritual King stepped forward.
"I was going to give you one week to prepare for the third and final challenge," he said, voice echoing across the grounds. "But…"
A pause. The silence was heavy.
"I've changed my mind."
The students stiffened.
"The final challenge begins… tomorrow."
Gasps rippled through the ranks.
Ryju's heart skipped a beat.
Tomorrow?!
To be continued...
