It was done using abilities.
Damage caused by abilities cannot be treated with conventional methods, they can only be healed by someone like Suhee.
Still, conventional medicine could help him stay alive. Life support might sustain him, even if he never wakes up. But Suhee wasn't skilled enough to completely heal the village chief.
She couldn't access her powers, not because she lacked the strength, but because she was suppressing her memories and experiences. She didn't want to remember. She wanted to forget… to leave the past behind and learn new things, live a new life.
But because of me, she had to remember everything she wished she to forget, the betrayal, the torture, the pain.
Suhee was on the roof with Mr. Park, who was helping her feel the ether in the air. It was faint, but you could see the particles starting to gather near her.
The only thing special about people like Suhee and me is that we can sense and gather the ether present in the air, using it as energy to activate our abilities.
We're not so different from normal humans, though ether does strengthen our bodies, allowing us to build muscle and recover faster than most.
Watching Suhee try so hard to learn how to use her powers, all to help others, made me feel ashamed. Unlike her, who uses her strength to heal and protect, I only seem to bring pain and suffering.
But I still had something I needed to do. I had come here to apologize to Suhee. At the last minute, I almost backed out. I was afraid, afraid of how she'd react.
But I had to face my fear, so I sucked it up and started walking towards her. Mr. Park saw me coming and quietly stepped away, giving us space.
I stood in front of her. And,
I said, "I was wrong, Suhee. I didn't want to keep this a secret from you. I just didn't want to lose you too. I'm sorry. You can hate me all you want… I'll be here, no matter what, until the day you decide to forgive me."
Suhee looked at me, her tone cold as she replied, "Why should I ever forgive you? You lied to me."
To be continued…
