Chapter 16 - 16

In the video.

"I'll prove I'm a man," little Luffy declared firmly before turning and walking away.

"I want to become stronger!"

As he walked, he muttered to himself, "But how do I get stronger?"

He suddenly realized—he had left too hastily!

He should have asked Grandpa or that Marine brother first.

"Oh! That Marine brother said that eating the Devil Fruit would make me stronger!"

Luffy touched his stomach.

Gurgle.

Instead of feeling powerful, he only felt hungry.

"It's all because that fruit tasted terrible! Now I'm starving… I should eat first and think about getting stronger later!"

With that in mind, Luffy returned to Makino's tavern, the place he always went to for meals since Garp rarely looked after him properly.

"Makino! I'm going to be a Marine!"

He proudly announced to everyone as soon as he stepped inside.

Makino smiled and pinched Luffy's cheek.

"You're not going to be a pirate anymore?"

Luffy grabbed a plate of meat and started eating, mumbling between bites, "Nope! I've decided—I'm gonna be a Marine! And not just any Marine—I'm gonna be even stronger than Grandpa!"

"That's amazing," Makino giggled. "Your grandpa is a very strong Marine too."

"I'll be even better! Grandpa eats three servings—I'll eat ten!"

Hiccup!

Luffy let out a huge burp, rubbing his now overly full belly.

After finishing his meal, Luffy prepared to leave, but then he stopped and turned to Makino.

"How much?"

Makino blinked in surprise.

It was the first time Luffy had ever asked this. He usually just ate for free without thinking about it.

"Windmill Village has always been protected by Mr. Garp. No pirate dares to cause trouble here. To thank him, I won't charge you for the meal," Makino said warmly.

"That won't do!" Luffy said, shaking his head. "That Marine brother said that a good Marine never takes anything from the people, not even a single cent!"

Luffy remembered how Robert had insisted on paying for a glass of hot water.

Now, he too had to follow the Marine's code!

"Then… 1,000 Beli," Makino said, raising ten fingers.

"I don't have money," Luffy realized, looking embarrassed.

Then he smacked his fist into his palm.

"I know! I'll catch you a big beast from the mountain to pay for the meal!"

That's what the villagers did, right?

They hunted and sold animals for money.

So, Luffy decided—he would go into the mountains and fight a beast!

A New Goodbye

As Luffy left the tavern, he saw the Marines escorting Shanks and his crew onto the warship.

Shanks also spotted Luffy and paused.

Luffy ran up, looking up at the captured Red Hair Pirates, and shouted:

"Shanks!"

"I'm not going to be a pirate anymore!"

"I'm going to be a Marine!"

"I'll find partners who are just as strong as you, and I'll find the One Piece before you do! And if we meet on the sea one day, I'll catch you!"

His childish voice echoed through the docks.

The Marines on board burst into laughter.

Although he didn't have much presence yet, he was undeniably adorable.

Shanks was speechless.

In just a few hours, Luffy had gone from wanting to be a pirate… to wanting to be a Marine?

The change was too fast.

"...I'm looking forward to that day," Shanks finally said before being led onto the warship.

"(Original) Sengoku: After meeting Robert, Luffy's farewell to Shanks changed completely."

In the original world, Luffy had declared he would become the Pirate King.

Here, he vowed to arrest Shanks.

The ideological difference was massive.

"(Original) Shanks: …Luffy wants to catch me?"

"(Original) Garp: The Luffy from that world is still the cutest. He's much better than my idiot grandson."

"(Original) Luffy: …"

After bidding farewell to Shanks, Luffy headed towards the mountains.

Garp watched from afar, feeling nervous.

"What if he changes his mind? I should have just agreed to let him join the Marines immediately."

He had worked so hard to get Luffy to change his ways…

What if it was all for nothing?

Robert took a sip from his thermos and replied calmly:

"Do you want a responsible Marine Admiral? Or just a good Marine soldier?"

Was that even a question?

"Of course, a Marine Admiral!" Garp said without hesitation.

"Then trust me."

"But…" Garp was still worried.

Robert chuckled. "Do you want to educate him, or should I?"

"Of course, you should, Commissar Robert!" Garp scratched his head.

Just then—

The screen paused.

Then, it switched to another scene.

A bold title appeared:

"Garp's Teaching vs. Robert's Teaching"

Then, the video of Admiral Luffy paused, and a new video from the original world started playing.

Garp's Training Method

Once again, little Luffy was on screen.

He had just said goodbye to Shanks.

This time, he was already wearing Shanks' straw hat.

The scene fast-forwarded.

Garp was leading Luffy up a mountain.

"Grandpa, where are we going?"

Garp answered casually, "You can't stay in the village anymore. You're getting too close to pirates."

"From today on, I'll train you to become a great Marine!"

"I don't want to be a Marine! I want to be a Pirate!" Luffy said stubbornly.

BONK!

Garp punched Luffy on the head.

A massive lump instantly formed.

"OWWW! But I'm a rubber man! Why does it hurt?!"

"Because this is the fist of love!" Garp laughed.

"Grandpa, it really hurts! What are we training for today?"

Garp grinned.

"Today's training… is me throwing you off a cliff!"

Luffy: ???

"(Original) Sengoku: Garp, are you serious?"

"(Original) Garp: Hahaha! Of course! My training method is way better than Robert's! Only my method can create excellent Marines!"

"(Original) Sengoku: …Do you want to look at your grandson now and say that again?"

People from both worlds were completely stunned.

This was the first time they had seen such a training method.

Was this really training… or was it just attempted murder?!
