Chapter 340 - The Trap Within

– Skylar's POV

The secure room was dead silent.

No devices. No screens. No surveillance. Just four of my most trusted strategists, a dim overhead light, and me—Skylar Blackwood—sitting at the head of the obsidian table like it was a war council.

Because that's exactly what it had become.

"We're compromised," I said flatly. No sugar-coating. No politics.

The room tensed.

Lucas, my chief operations strategist, frowned. "Compromised how? We've swept for bugs—"

"It's not bugs," I snapped. "It's him."

They didn't have to ask who.

Chris.

"He's feeding us money, connections, goodwill. He wants this to grow. That donation from Sector 3? That's his leash, and we just put it around our necks willingly."

They looked at each other, some in denial, others afraid to admit the obvious.

I leaned forward.

"This isn't support. It's containment. The moment we step out of the line he's drawn, he'll pull the plug—and we'll fall harder than we ever rose."

Silence.

Then Clara, my media director, spoke. "So… what now? Do we cut the funding? Go public? Expose it?"

I shook my head. "No. That would be playing into his hands. He wants us to react emotionally. He wants us to panic. Instead…"

I stood, walking slowly around the table.

"We give him what he expects. Smiles. Growth. Influence. We keep playing the part. But underneath, we restructure—cut all traceable lines, build a shadow branch of the agency, one he can't touch."

"A ghost arm?" Lucas asked, intrigued.

I nodded. "Exactly. A network of loyalists, off-grid, untraceable. Hidden in the cracks of the empire. If Chris thinks he's feeding a fire, then let's make sure it burns in places he can't see."

Clara's eyes lit up. "The people already trust you. We can plant subtle messaging—shift loyalty to you, not the agency. He thinks he owns the building, but we'll take the soul."

Finally, I thought. Now we're speaking war.

I glanced out the sealed window. Somewhere, Chris was watching. Smiling. Thinking he was still in control.

Let him think that.

Because when I strike…

I won't aim for the agency.

I'll aim for the throne.

End of Scene.
