On the present battlefield
They stood frozen, staring into each other's eyes. For a moment, the chaos of the battlefield faded, drowned out by the storm of emotions between them.
Luci's mind raced.
Was this real? Could Asher truly still be alive?
The boy he remembered felt so far away, yet here he was: red hair blazing like fire, green eyes piercing through the haze of war.
Asher, on the other hand, searched Luci's face with a quiet intensity.
Had Luci forgotten him? Or… have I changed too much to be remembered?
"Lu…"
"Ash…"
Their voices trembled, carrying years of memories in a single syllable.
But Asher didn't finish his sentence. Behind Luci, the unmistakable glow of rainbow flames surged forward, their deadly arcs splitting the battlefield with blistering heat. The colors pulsed hypnotically: red, green, blue, searing the air as they closed in on Luci's unguarded back.
The flames stirred something deep within Asher, a fear buried so far that even he could not fully name it. His muscles tensed, his wings snapping open instinctively.
The flames roared toward Luci, consuming everything in their path. He flinched, bracing for impact, but it never came.
A shadow fell over him.
Asher moved with blinding speed, enveloping Luci in his arms and wings. The heat of the flames licked at his back, but he didn't flinch. His body pressed against Luci's, shielding him completely.
Luci felt himself pulled against a broad, muscular chest. For a moment, Luci felt as if he were floating, detached from the chaos of the battlefield. All he could sense was the steady rhythm of Asher's breathing and the faint tremor in his hold, as though something about the flames unsettled him.
Pressed against Asher's chest, Luci felt a forgotten sense of safety wash over him. It was a warmth that had nothing to do with the fire—a feeling he hadn't known in years, one he thought he would never feel again.
"Ash…" Luci murmured, his voice breaking slightly.
Asher didn't say a word, he didn't even heard him. His movements were fast, instinctive, as though nothing else mattered but keeping Luci safe.
When the attack finally passed, Asher gently set Luci down on the ground. For a brief moment, his green eyes flicked over Luci's face, lingering as if searching for something.
Then, his gaze darted skyward.
Luci wanted to say something but another roar shattered the moment.
Luci turned his head just as a massive shadow descended from above. The ground cracked beneath the force of its landing, sending tremors through the earth. A demon stood before them, its female body draped in light armor, a war mask obscuring its features. That terrifying mana coming from it, there was no doubt: it was definitely an overlord.
Its wings spread wide, and arcs of rainbow fire spiraled around it in a dazzling display of deadly beauty. The creature's molten scales shimmered in the firelight, and its blazing eyes locked onto Asher with predatory focus, ignoring Luci entirely.
"The eternal flames…"
Luci's breath hitched. These were the flames that had destroyed his family, the flames wielded by none other than the bloodline of the demon queen Lilith. He lost his parents to those flammes, he couldn't let them take again someone to him.
Asher leapt into the air, far from Luci, his wings propelling him toward the fiery demon. His movements were precise, deliberate, but there was a tension in the way he flew, as if something about the flames was pulling at him, slowing him down.
The fire demon seems her to be just entertained by that fight.
"Ah! You're bold enough to duel me, or just crazy?" she laughed at it was just a game to her. "Do you even know who you challenged?"
She shifted her weight like a predator toying with its prey.
"… The executor flames of Lilith… Ignis."
Asher has her of her but he expected to never meet a demon close to Lilith.
Her laugh echoed through the battlefield, sharp and gleeful, like a child who didn't understand the consequences of her game.
Ignis spat, her claws igniting as she lunged toward Asher.
"For a demon, you fight like prey, not predator..."
Luci's heart pounded as he watched Asher fighting but couldn't help or even hear him. Asher's strikes were quick and powerful, but Ignis countered with brutal efficiency, her flames coiling around him like serpents.
Something was wrong. Asher's movements grew erratic, his strikes precise but lacking power. His wings beat furiously, but there was a hesitation in every step, every motion—as though the flames were chains pulling him back.
Luci's chest tightened. He's struggling… is it because of the flames?
Above, Ignis lunged at Asher, her claws igniting with rainbow fire.
"You're a weird one!" she teased, her tone dripping with mockery. "Come on. Fight me properly!"
Asher dodged, barely avoiding the blow. His breath came in shallow gasps, his green eyes flicking toward the flames as if they were alive, hunting him.
Luci staggered to his feet, his body trembling.
Not again. I won't let these flames take someone else I care about. Not this time.
"Asher…" he called out, his voice cracking.
He took a shaky step forward, his legs barely holding him upright.
Luci stumbled, his breath shallow, but he kept moving. Each step felt heavier than the last, but he couldn't stop.
"Asher… we promised…"
The words echoed in his mind of memories of their childhood promise.
"...facing everything together…" has he tries to remember clearly.
"Asher… do not... abandon me..." Luci murmured, his voice breaking as his body gave out. He collapsed into the dirt, his vision fading.
Through the haze, he saw Ignis towering over Asher, her flames coiling around him like chains. Asher's wings beat desperately, but he couldn't break free.
Luci clawed at the ground weakly, tears blurring his vision.
I just found you again… Why are you slipping away already?
His hand reached out, trembling, before falling limp.
The last thing he saw was Asher turning toward him one last time, his expression unreadable. The flames surged, obscuring his silhouette, and then everything went dark.
In his sleep, memories began to stir.
He remembered a boy, not a warrior, not a demon lord, but a boy with wide green eyes and a soft smile. A boy who had stood in the shadows of the forest, holding flowers in his clawed hands. A boy who had once been his friend.
He remember that Asher made him feel less alone in his world, that the demon was just like him and in the same time different from anything else... but he couldn't remember the exact raison why.
