Chapter 66 - Out of time

Assassins? Most likely, I can detect at the very least three armed with demonic weapons. Judging by the amount of demonic energy emitted, they're not pushovers either.

No, if they have a demonic weapon, they most likely already know how to absorb a demon. I can't let them get ahold of my daughter.

I tried getting up, but I couldn't; my body was too beat up to do that. All I could really do was get on all fours as I was grunting like a beast. Among the assassins, there was an incredibly sensitive individual.

He was able to detect our presence even amidst all that chaos and used a strange, dark weapon to break through the walls to get to us.

"Found you!" He screamed; he was holding a couple of scythes in his hands, his eyes were set on me, but before he could even try to attack me, a spear pierced through his head, impaling him to the wall.

"Above!" One of the two remaining survivors shouted, I heard them rushing through the stairs as I finally was able to stand.

I could barely walk, my hearing had become extremely messy, and I couldn't see well what was happening. I knew that my daughter had engaged in combat with the enemies; there was a ruckus and objects whizzing all over the place.

One of the assassins managed to sneak past her as she was fighting against the other assassin on equal terms.

I began to channel all of my power into the body part controlled by the demon, my right eye. As the eye fell from my head, I caught it in time with my right hand and turned the fallen eye into a purple glowing dagger.

"With this—" Before I could finish chanting, the assassin headed towards me was impaled from behind.

The other assassin was slowly absorbing my daughter as she got distracted in order to defend.

Don't you dare!

As I pointed the knife forward, a couple of large venomous snakes emerged from my sides, charging ahead. The assassin couldn't adapt in time; he managed to push one away, but the other managed to bite him and inject its venom in.

Done.

I then ordered the snake to bring the man to my face so that I could take a better look at him before he could let out his last breath.

"You think this is enough to save you? How much time do you think you can buy before you'll eventually succumb? You're lucky that today you had a demon on your side, but how long will that luck last?" The man taunted me as his face was slowly contorting from the pain.

I could see visibly the purple venom spreading to his body; it glowed under his skin, causing him constant, unimaginable pain as it rapidly spread all over his body.

He was right, but I couldn't have cared less; all I wanted at the moment was to ensure my daughter's safety, so before he could even try to manifest whatever power she had given him, I ordered the snakes to smash his body against the wall of the hallway and move forward while pressing the body of the assassin against the wall.

The snake, on the other hand, thrashed the house, throwing the body left and right until the torso was ripped off from the lower body.

Without energy, I once again fell to the ground and watched as slowly but surely the many demons of those three assassins were freed from their bodies, and when everything seemed over, the gold liquid emerged from the last corpse.

It branded all the other demons, forcing them to turn into floating spheres around my daughter.

I woke up the next day, lying in a clean bed. The room was lacking the blood and gore I saw the day prior; it didn't even smell like shit. In the air I could smell the faint smell of fried eggs.

What happened?

I was a bit on edge; I didn't know how to take such a strange situation, but this sentiment quickly faded as I opened the door of the room. Outside there were all the corpses that once littered the room. Olivia hadn't tidied up the room; she had just moved everything somewhere else. The smell was even worse than the day prior, so I immediately shut the door.

Where the hell did the smell of fried eggs come from then if not from outside?

As I looked around, I found the egg hidden beneath the bed.

After a quick breakfast, I ran down to look for my daughter and found her using her powers to produce more of that gold liquid to use it to slowly absorb the corpses lying on the ground.

"What happened while I was gone?" I asked her.

"What do you think?" She answered in a spiteful tone, her gaze looking at me with contempt.

I remained silent; the only sound interrupting that really uncomfortable moment was the sound of the corpses slowly collapsing, sending splashes of gore all over the walls as they were compressed into small spheres.

"We waited for you, but then one day a bunch of homeless people came in and killed us. When I opened my eyes, I was already in this state." She later answered as she kept absorbing the flesh and bones of her victims.

I wanted more information on how she became like this but didn't push it further, as that was probably an incredibly unpleasant memory.

"What about you? What were you doing while you were away?" She asked me as she crushed yet another corpse, this time more violently than usual, splattering his remains everywhere.

"I—" When I tried to open my mouth, my voice couldn't come out. I didn't know if she would've even believed my words. Another part of me was ashamed of my decision to stay away for so long. Had I not been so foolish, I wouldn't have agreed to take part in such a dangerous mission.

She turned around, piercing a hole in me with her icy glare, waiting for my response while locking eyes with me.

"My mission was to cause a revolt, an insurrection, in order for the army to be able to intervene and conquer some of the lands in the fracture." I explained.

"And did you succeed?" She asked.

"No, an accident took place, someone kidnapped an important kid, and the scarlet devil charged in to rescue him; in doing so, she decimated our army and destroyed most of the city that stood in her way." I explained.

She took a moment before opening back her mouth; she was pondering something as she observed one of the demon-turned spheres orbiting around her body.

"You…" She wanted to say something, but she hesitated. She turned her face away and resumed the consumption of humans, secreting more of that golden liquid out of her body.

"Do you remember something else? Do you have any idea why you turned into a demon?" I asked her.

I couldn't even keep my head straight; I couldn't handle seeing her reduced to that state. Demons feed on emotions, so right now she had become a lot more unstable; her future was filled with enemies, as many would probably want to get a hold of her abilities and powers.

'Perhaps we should head towards the rupture; that could be a much safer environment to live in for her, certainly safer than here… No, down there it is filled with all kinds of powerful individuals, but if she causes any more trouble here, they'll send the golden guards to deal with her.'

As I was desperately thinking of a way to solve our problem, I heard the sound of someone breaking one of our windows. It wasn't an assassin or anything of the sort; it was just another homeless man trying to take refuge from the constant acidic rain in our house.

The expression on my daughter's face darkened as she turned to face the direction from which the intruder got in.

"Wait—"

Before I could say anything, she had disappeared, and as I chased after her, I got there too late; she had already impaled the individual with a spear lodged into his mouth so that he couldn't speak or scream for help.

I had to physically drag her away before she could start using her powers to defile the corpse and turn it into a house decoration like she did for all the other corpses.
