Chapter 120: The Origin of The Stone

Life at Hogwarts continued as usual. Other than Bella, no one knew what had occurred the day before.

Not even the ones most affected, like Lucius Malfoy and the Lestrange brothers.

Far from that, the mood among students was one of excitement as they were only two weeks away from Spring Break when they would get to go home for slightly over a week and rest from all the classes and tests.

During Potions class, Bella had tried to speak with James, but there were too many eyes on them, making it difficult.

And James himself was too distracted with his next project, not really sharing Bella's concerns.

His actions from the day before had definitely accelerated the rate at which major events would occur.

From what he remembered from his Godfather's stories, Voldemort was not supposed to openly start his conquest of Britain until they were in their last year of school, so three years from now.

But there was no chance he would wait that long now that he had started to lose followers and the House of Black had denied its alliance.

Because of this, James was now forced to speed up his preparations. He had much work to do still.

With this in mind, he made his way to his secret laboratory inside the chamber, and without even looking at the pile of letters that were accumulating on the dropbox, James went inside his magical briefcase.

It was here where he had stored his most important projects.

He entered the room to the right and glanced at the golden cauldron sitting quietly on the table.

The flame had long gone out, but the contents remained the same.

James opened the lid. Inside the cauldron was a formless substance that seemed to emit a vibrant white light.

It was the Prima Materia he had created during his previous break.

This alchemic substance was the base for many of the most powerful creations that humans had come up with. But James had one specific purpose in mind for it.

He was going to create the Philosopher's Stone with it.

"Not looking forward to that…" He felt somewhat conflicted about this, but ultimately, he had determined that it was going to be necessary to guarantee his victory.

There was a dark secret about the Philosopher's Stone that almost no one knew about.

"Everyone praised Nicolas Flamel for his creation…if only they knew. Would Dumbledore still consider him as a friend?" James wondered.

The truth was that Nicolas Flamel was not the inventor of this magical artifact, just the last one to figure out how to craft it.

Back in his original life, James had been the last one to achieve this feat, but he never created the stone, despite knowing how to do it, and being well aware that with the Elixir of Life, he could have lived for several more centuries. The price was heavy and he was not willing to pay it back then.

There is little information about the original creator of the stone, as this happened during very ancient times, before the written word was invented and people had to pass knowledge from mouth to mouth.

During this long-lost era, there was an evil warlock who ruled over his land with an iron fist. He was able to wield magic in a primitive but effective way, more than enough to kill anyone who dared to challenge him.

The only bits and pieces of knowledge about this man came from the one who found the remains of his kingdom many centuries after it had collapsed.

A wizard from the Great Sumerian Empire who lived around four thousand years ago.

The texts written by this wizard spoke of his expedition to these lost ruins and what he learned from them.

But more important was the mysterious stone he discovered buried along with its long-dead owner.

This wizard was extremely gifted, a genius of the likes that only appears once in a millennia.

The wizard became fascinated by the stone once he learned that it could turn any metal into solid gold. But even back then, he knew there was more to it.

After many decades of research, he was able to discover another use for the stone. He used it to create the first version of the Elixir of Life, and thanks to it, this wizard lived a tremendously long life.

Near the end of his research, he learned how the stone was created and was horrified by it. But as a researcher, he still documented everything, hoping that whoever found his diaries and notes would make good use of them.

It would be Nicolas Flamel's mentor who found his laboratory, a very long time after his death, and long after the collapse of the Sumerian Empire.

This wizard would then give his findings to his students, who went on to use them for personal gain and lived for over seven centuries.

Flamel had no students other than Albus Dumbledore, but for some reason, he never passed the formula for the Philosopher's Stone to him.

If James had to guess, it was because Flamel must have known that Dumbledore would have destroyed everything once he learned what was necessary to create the stone.

Something you can say about Albus Dumbledore is that the man has a firm set of morals.

So instead of that, Flamel hid his most questionable pieces of knowledge in a secret laboratory, which location he never shared with anyone.

It ended up being none other than Harry Potter, during one of his expeditions to some Babylonian ruins, who ended up opening the entrance to this secret laboratory and discovering the only remaining manual on how to create this legendary magical artifact.

But he never constructed it, and he never passed this knowledge to any of his students. Instead, he took it to his grave.

This is because the secret to crafting the Philosopher's Stone is…human souls.

The stone requires a large amount of souls from recently killed humans.

Its first creator, the evil warlock, had likely created the stone by accident while massacring his people with his magic to enforce his rule.

James stared at the Prima Materia while thinking about this.

In his previous life, he chose to die of old age instead of creating this cursed artifact.

However, now things were different. It was not only his life on the line.

James had discovered another function for the Philosopher's Stone, one that none of its previous creators had come up with.

The stone would almost guarantee his victory over Voldemort before he even had a chance to rise to power, thus saving countless lives.

"I have to," James said softly.
