Chapter 43 - Darkest of Dawns Part 6.3 (Jin)

Right then she looked pristine, immaculate, but he couldn't unsee it.

He sighed. He was a piece of shit, a bastard, a scumbag. Not a knight in shining armour, neglecting his duties. But a tree abandoning its roots to steal a little extra sun.

He had to go back. Even if to just yell at her for letting him go. How dare she walk into a beating alone? How dare she not share her burden! And if it wasn't a burden. If she was into that kind of thing, then how double dare she indulge in a weird fetish alone? Either way there would be yelling. He dared her to yell back. The idea lessened the weight of the world on his chest enough to let him smile and turn back.

The sound of a dozen bombs landing at once hit, threatening to burst his ear drums. The earth beneath his feet trembled, a shockwave shattered windows, car alarms blared. It felt as though his chest was going to explode. The pain lingering in his dormant foot exploded back to life and he was flipped head over heels only to land onto his diaphragm.

The dust and sand cleared showing Paige, in the middle of ground zero with a single arm extended. Eyes bright green, shining in the sun. Her face lit up with glee, she looked uncaged and given all the world's wealth at the same time.

He stared, she was back. The woman who'd saved his life.

Then she vanished.

The building behind her was missing a chunk of foundation and starting to lean. Dust exploded out the bottom floor as brick after brick shattered, teetering before falling.

Dust flew like a sandstorm over Jin. He was frozen. There was no way to avoid death, even if it missed. It was better to be hit by the whole building than vegetized by stray bricks. He'd be crushed down to nothing and they'd never identify him. He'd just be gone, again.

He raised his hands, an explosive energy brought to his senses his own blood, like being flayed alive.

Something beyond the beast's control howled and then, shut up, leaving the beast pacing in circles.

Pale blue cords appeared from all angles, wrapping around the building. Its descent stopped; the crowd oddly silent.

Jin, dumbstruck, looked around to see time had frozen for everyone except him. The bottom of the building turned blue, filling gaps. From behind came a (Scottish?) voice speaking in English.

"[Move out the way. We're trying to do a job here!]"
