Chapter 31 - chapter 31

Max stood tall, his fists still clenched, his body bruised and aching from the fight. But his resolve was unshaken. He wiped the blood from his lip, staring Adrian down with a look of determination in his eyes.

"You're wrong if you think I'll back down," Max said, his voice steady, but fierce. "I'm not some coward who'll run away. I'm here for Grace, and I'm not going anywhere. You think you can just waltz back into her life after all the damage you've done? You think you can take everything from her without consequence?"

Adrian's eyes were cold, his anger not subsiding in the slightest. He wiped a streak of blood from his cheek and took a step closer, his voice low and commanding. "You don't know what you're dealing with, Max. Grace is my wife. You think you can just step in and take her away from me? That's not going to happen. She belongs to me, and I'll do whatever it takes to keep it that way."

Max's eyes narrowed, a fire igniting inside him as he took a step forward, closing the distance between them. "No, Adrian. She is her own person, and she doesn't belong to you. You've tried to control her, to break her spirit, but I won't let you do that anymore. You may have been her husband, but you've failed her. I'm not going to let you continue hurting her."

Adrian's fists tightened, his jaw clenched with irritation. He stood his ground, his pride on full display. "You don't know anything about us. We've been through things together that you'll never understand. Grace needs me. She'll never choose you over me."

Max met Adrian's glare, his voice rising with intensity. "Maybe she doesn't need you anymore. She needs someone who will love her, protect her, and support her. Someone who will be there for her when she's been broken and left in the dust. I will be that person. I'll fight for her, no matter what it takes. I won't give up."

Adrian sneered, his voice sharp and cold. "You think you can just sweep in and claim her? You're nothing compared to me. She's mine. Grace is my wife, and I'm not letting her go."

Max's resolve didn't waver. He took another step forward, his eyes locked on Adrian's. "You don't get it, do you? Love isn't about possession or control. It's about mutual respect, about being there for each other through everything. You may have been her husband, but you failed her, and I won't let you do it again. I'll prove to her that there's more to love than what you've shown her."

Adrian was silent for a moment, his eyes burning with anger, but something flickered behind them—an emotion Max couldn't quite place. It was almost like a fear, a desperation.

"Grace doesn't need you," Adrian muttered through gritted teeth, though the words felt hollow. "She can't have you. She's my wife, and I won't allow you to come between us."

Max took a deep breath, his tone unwavering. "I won't back down. I'm here for Grace, and I'll do whatever it takes to show her that I'll never give up on her. So, you can keep thinking that she's yours, but in the end, she'll decide who she wants to be with. And I'm not giving up on love, Adrian. Not now, not ever."

Adrian glared at Max for a long moment, his chest rising and falling with the weight of his frustration. Finally, he turned and walked away, his voice carrying one last time before he left. "Grace is mine, Max. And you're going to regret thinking you have a chance with her."

Max stood there, watching Adrian disappear into the distance. His heart was pounding, but his resolve only grew stronger. He had made a promise to himself, and now, more than ever, he knew he would not back down. He would fight for Grace, no matter the cost, no matter how many battles he had to face along the way. Love was worth fighting for, and he wasn't about to lose the woman he had always cared for without giving it everything he had.

As Max turned to leave, he couldn't shake the feeling that the battle was far from over, but he was ready. He would fight for Grace's heart, and he wouldn't stop until she knew that he was the one who truly loved her.

Grace stood frozen at the door, her eyes wide with shock as she took in the scene before her. Adrian was standing in the living room, his knuckles bruised and bloodied, his clothes disheveled from the fight. Max, though battered, had a look of defiance in his eyes as he stood near the door, clearly just having come from the confrontation.

Her heart raced as the realization hit her—Adrian had attacked Max.

"Adrian!" she shouted, her voice trembling with anger. "What the hell is wrong with you? How could you do this?"

Adrian's eyes flickered toward her, his face full of frustration, but also a hint of guilt. "Grace, you don't understand—"

"No!" Grace cut him off, her voice rising in fury. "I do understand! I don't know what's gotten into you, but this—this is not how you solve things! You can't just go around attacking people because you're threatened by them!"

Max's eyes softened as he looked at Grace, but he remained silent, sensing the storm brewing between the couple. Grace, however, wasn't done.

"I trusted you, Adrian. I believed in this marriage. I believed in us," Grace said, her voice cracking with emotion. "But now I find out you've been resorting to violence to deal with your insecurities? Over Max of all people?"

Adrian took a step toward her, his face clouded with frustration. "Grace, it's not like that. I don't trust him. I don't know what kind of hold he has on you, but I won't let him try to take you away from me."

Grace's anger flared even more. "Take me away from you?!" she spat, her hands shaking with emotion. "There's nothing between me and Max! He's my friend, Adrian. Nothing more. He's been here for me when I needed someone. And you—you—attacked him because you couldn't handle the fact that someone else was in my life?"

Max looked at her, his heart aching with what she was saying, but he understood. She was angry. She was hurt. And as much as he wanted to explain himself, he needed to let her process everything first.

Grace continued, her eyes locked on Adrian with a fierce intensity. "You're supposed to be my husband, Adrian. You should be supporting me, not treating my friends like enemies. Max didn't do anything to deserve this. He's only been here to help me through everything you've put me through."

The silence hung heavy between them as Adrian's gaze dropped to the ground, his fists still clenched. He looked like he was going to say something, but the words seemed stuck in his throat.

"You've broken my trust, Adrian," Grace said quietly, the words piercing through the tension. "I don't know if we can fix this. I don't know if I can keep living like this. I don't want to choose between you two, but what you've done... I don't know how to look past that."

Adrian flinched, the weight of her words sinking in. His chest tightened, and for the first time, he seemed to see the true extent of his actions. But before he could respond, Grace turned to Max, her voice softening, though still laced with emotion. "Max, I never wanted you to be dragged into this. I never wanted you to be caught in the middle of this... mess." She shook her head, feeling the exhaustion in her bones. "You're my friend, and that's all you'll ever be to me. Please, don't make this more complicated than it already is."

Max nodded, his expression unreadable. He wanted to say so much more, to explain everything—how he felt about her, how much he cared—but it wasn't the time. Not now. Not when things were so volatile between her and Adrian.

Grace walked away from them, her mind a whirl of confusion, frustration, and hurt. Adrian didn't follow her, and Max didn't either, both sensing that she needed space to breathe, to think.

But as she retreated to the solitude of her room, the sound of the fight still echoing in her ears, Grace couldn't help but feel the weight of everything pressing down on her. How had everything gone so wrong? How had she let herself get so lost in this tangled mess of emotions, lies, and hurt?

Max was right about one thing—there was more to love than what Adrian had shown her. But the reality of it all was far more complicated than she had ever imagined.
