Chapter 5 - chapter 18

### Chapter 18

The opportunity to work directly with Nathan King came unexpectedly. His executive assistant was out sick during a critical week when the board of directors was visiting. Anna was temporarily assigned to provide support, a responsibility that both excited and terrified her.

Her first task was preparing briefing materials for board presentations. Nathan's standards were exacting—every fact double-checked, every chart precisely formatted, every timeline verified. Anna worked until midnight ensuring perfection, arriving early the next morning to deliver the materials.

"Excellent work," Nathan said, reviewing the documents. "This level of detail and accuracy is exactly what I need." His approval felt like a significant achievement.

Throughout the week, Anna anticipated his needs efficiently, managed his calendar diplomatically, and handled various crises with calm competence. She observed his leadership style up close—how he listened carefully, asked insightful questions, and made decisions quickly once he had sufficient information.

On Friday, as the board meetings concluded successfully, Nathan thanked her personally. "You've been invaluable this week, Anna. I'll remember that."

That brief conversation stayed with her long after returning to her regular responsibilities.
