Chapter 15: A Place to Call Home

---

1. Morning in the Ruins

The early sunlight filtered through the cracks in the walls, painting the ruined village in soft gold. Alex stretched, feeling the stiffness in his muscles after another night on the hard ground.

"Not the worst place we've slept," he muttered, standing and glancing at Lila.

She was already awake, sharpening her dagger with slow, deliberate strokes. Her expression was focused, the quiet broken only by the scrape of metal against stone.

"This place could work," Alex said, gesturing to the village.

"For what?" Lila asked without looking up.

"A base. Something permanent. We've got water, decent shelter, and enough space to make improvements. It's better than wandering."

Lila shrugged, finally meeting his gaze. "It's not the worst idea. But it's going to take work."

Alex smirked. "We've got time, and I've got minions."

2. Discussing Classes

As they worked to clear the debris in their shelter, Alex leaned against his spear, wiping sweat from his brow.

"Hey," he began, "what class are you?"

Lila paused, raising an eyebrow. "You're just now asking?"

"Didn't seem like a priority until now," Alex replied.

She sighed, opening her system screen with a flick of her hand. The faint, glowing interface hovered before her. "I'm a Scout. Pretty basic stuff: sneaky, fast, good with a blade."

"That fits," Alex said, nodding.

"Yeah, well, the 'sneaky' part doesn't work so great when you're limping," Lila muttered, gesturing to her injured leg.

"You're still holding your own," Alex said firmly. "And if we're staying here, we'll figure out ways to work around it. Maybe even find something to help you heal faster."

Lila closed her system screen, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Thanks, Necromancer."

Alex grinned, opening his own system screen. Novice Necromancer gleamed in the corner, a constant reminder of his strange and unsettling abilities.

"Looks like we make a good team," he said.

3. Scouting and Planning the Base

The two spent the day exploring the village, searching for anything that could help them turn it into a proper base.

The Central Building:

The sturdy building they'd used for shelter became their main base. Alex began piling rubble against weaker sections of the walls, while Lila scouted for additional entry points to block.

The Well:

With water secured, Alex used his Raise Lesser Undead spell to summon a skeletal worker to help haul water and clear debris. The minion moved clumsily but proved useful.

Supplies:

While exploring the ruins, Lila found an old storage cellar beneath one of the houses. Inside, they discovered rusted tools, scraps of cloth, and a bundle of dried herbs that Alex identified as edible.

4. A Warning from the System

As they worked, Lila paused, her brow furrowing. "Hey, Alex. Your system ever say weird stuff to you?"

"What do you mean?" Alex asked, glancing at her.

"Mine keeps giving me vague warnings," she replied, pulling up her system screen again. A notification hovered at the top:

---

Warning: Survival Odds Decreasing. Establish Safe Zone Immediately.

---

"'Safe Zone?'" Alex read aloud, frowning. "Maybe it's connected to this place."

Lila shrugged. "Your guess is as good as mine. But if the system thinks we need one, I'd rather not argue with it."

"Good thing we're already working on it," Alex replied, though the warning left a knot of unease in his stomach.

5. Making the Decision

As the sun set, Alex and Lila sat by their fire, the day's labor weighing heavily on their muscles.

"This place isn't much," Lila said, staring into the flames. "But it's better than running."

Alex nodded. "If we stay here, we can build something. Defenses, traps, maybe even find a way to grow food. It's a start."

Lila smirked. "You really think we can turn this dump into a fortress?"

"Not a fortress," Alex replied, "but a home."

Lila leaned back, her expression softening. "Alright, Necromancer. Let's see what you've got."

For the first time since their arrival, Alex felt a spark of hope. The ruins weren't much, but they were theirs—and for now, that was enough.

Themes and Future Development:

1. Understanding Classes:

The system screen is a tool to understand their abilities, but its cryptic nature keeps them guessing. Lila's Scout class is practical, but her injury limits her full potential, adding a layer of challenge.

2. Base Building:

The ruined village becomes their first step toward reclaiming a sense of stability. Future chapters can explore fortifying the base, scavenging for supplies, and preparing for inevitable threats.

3. System Warnings:

The system's warning about survival odds adds urgency to their decision. This introduces a mechanic where the system subtly nudges players toward key goals while leaving room for interpretation.
