Chapter 105 - One-Sided Battle

"How's this possible? They are nothing but over grown dogs. How are they surviving thirty calibre bullets and ripping through my well-trained men like they were butter?" the leader asked, flabbergasted. "I have no idea boss! What are your orders?" the squad leader asked again.

"Switch to the fifty calibre and the few amour-piercing rounds we have. If they don't work, we will retreat", the leader ordered and the mercenaries obeyed instantly, bringing out the fifty calibre rifles to buy time for the amour-piercing rifles to be assembled.

After taking down the first line of the mercenaries, the direwolves turned their attention to the rest and charged again.

A rain of fifty calibre bullets showered upon the charging direwolves, successfully chipping at their hardened fur, causing them to bleed a little as slight pain shot through their bodies. Angered by the pain, the direwolves became even more ferocious as they charged wildly at the mercenaries. The battle that followed was a bloody one as the mercenaries were not spared.

Standing far behind, Drogo overlooked the entire battle field, ensuring that nothing out of control happened. "Chief! I have a report!", Raegan said as he swooped down and hovered near Drogo's head.

"What's wrong?" Drogo asked. "The human invaders are preparing some kind of weapon. I have a feeling it could cause some real damage to the pack's frontliners", Raegan reported.

"Then I guess it's time I stepped in. Buy me sometime till I get there", Drogo requested as Raegan nodded and shot off into the sky. "I haven't had many chances to use this power. This is the perfect chance to try it", Drogo said to himself as he closed his eyes and started focusing in on himself.

Unlike his master and his comrades who could use their powers at a moment's notice, he and the other dire creatures needed to focus heavily to activate theirs. His fur swayed mystically as his body was surrounded by a faint hue.

Raegan and his flock reached the mercenaries who were setting up the amour piercing rounds and started attacking from the sky. Using their superior arial speed, they evaded all the bullets from the mercenaries and with their sharp talons, disarmed several of them 'literally'.

The armour piercing rifle was soon completely set up and ready to fire. "Boss! We are ready to fire. What are your orders?" a squad leader asked the panicking leader. His men had been reduced to half of the original number and they were yet to kill even one of the wolf monsters currently battling them.

"Cover the rest as we retreat", the leader said in a panicky tone. "But boss, there aren't enough rounds to fully cover our retreat", the squad leader argued back. "Do I look like I give a damn! It doesn't matter if they die. They just need to buy time for most of us to escape", the leader retorted.

As the argued back and forth on the worth of their men's lives, the ground beneath their feet started to shake slightly. The turned their heads to see that the larger wolf monster had finally made a move. It was currently charging fiercely in their direction with a menacing look in its eyes.

With a growl, Drogo commanded the direwolves to retreat and they obeyed instantly, leaving their adversaries on the ground; worse for wear.

With the path before him cleared, Drogo leapt high into the sky and stomped the ground, firmly locking his claws in it.

"Fi…fire at will!" the leader commanded as the mercenaries manning the armour piercing rounds opened fire at the charging beast.

"Armament!" Drogo chanted as the faint hue crystalized on his fur, turning it as hard as diamonds. He then proceeded to tank every single shot of the armour piercing rounds with his body all the while gathering more of the hue in the back of his throat.

"This is a dream…a God damn dream", the mercenary leader mumbled to himself after the rounds were all used up and the target was still standing strong before them; not a single injury to speak off. "Retreat! Let's get out of here!" he shouted as he turned to run.

Without giving them the chance act on their plans, Drogo opened its mouth to reveal a coagulated ball of the hue. 'Sonic Howl!' Drogo chanted as a powerful sonic blast left his mouth and fired towards the fleeing mercenaries.

"Get down!" a squad leader shouted as he pushed his boss out of the way. Before anyone could react, a powerful sonic wave blasted through them causing sever, almost fatal, internal injuries. All those who were caught up in the blast had their ear drums ruptured, their brains rattled and their internal organs seriously discombobulated.

Seeing their injured comrades, the lucky mercenaries sought to escape this battle even more than before. As they run towards the mountain, their blood run cold as they saw several foxlike monsters before them.

The dire foxes attacked them with speeds that could barely be followed by the naked eyes of man. In trying to fight back, the mercenaries wound up firing at their own men, either killing them outright or severely wounding them. The dire wolves soon joined the attack from behind in a pincer attack while the dire ravens struck from the sky.

With no possible way of fighting back, the gang of mercenaries were soon utterly defeated. The lucky ones came out missing just a limb or too while the rest were either already dead or in critical condition.

Standing at the top of the mountain, Samuel and the gang observed the battle form start to finish. They were really impressed by the abilities displayed by the dire beasts. Once the battle was over, Dr. Michaelson instructed Lisia to release the medical droids to attend to the mercenaries who were still alive.

"I'm surprised they managed to adapt to the mana so well that they could create spells of their own. I never thought it possible…they being native animals and all", Silendiana gave her observation.

"You are right, from the way they used their power, it was almost like they were born with it", Sylvia added. "We'll understand more as time goes on. For now, we have another task to handle", Samuel said to them and they nodded in agreement.
