Chapter 290 - Chapter 290, Someone Wrote Me a Letter

Chapter 290, Someone Wrote Me a Letter

Inside the cabin, there was a brief silence of two seconds.

Wu Heng didn't want to continue chatting with him.

He directly said, "Do you have anything else to say?"

"I...," the man hesitated, then asked, "Can you let me go this time? I can pay you to buy my life, and I promise never to trouble you again."

Wu Heng shook his head, "You should have cherished the last chance."

Swish~!

As soon as the words fell, the man suddenly sprang up, thrusting his sword forward.

Bang~!

A dull crash sounded.

The charging man was kicked in the abdomen by Skull-Crusher, flying backward like a cannonball.

He crashed into a large pile of barrels and debris behind him.

Blood Axe quickly stepped forward, raised his battle axe high, and swung it down.

Clang~!

The axe cut through the blocking iron sword and sliced open the man's chest.

The man coughed up a large amount of blood, his eyes full of resentment and unwillingness.

His body slowly went limp, losing all signs of life.

...…

Wu Heng wasn't surprised that this man had managed to escape.

During the operation to rescue 'Lady Shanella,' whether it was the initial attack by small boats or the battle at 'Cocktail Island' later on,

there was a possibility that some pirates escaped.

A few people might have fled, or maybe even half of them managed to get away.

He just didn't expect this one would come back and hire an assassin to kill him.

He took out his tablet and compared the pirate's wanted posters.

He didn't find this man on any wanted list.

This made Wu Heng puzzled.

He wasn't an important member of the pirate crew, so why go through all this trouble for revenge?

Do pirates have this much loyalty?

Wu Heng glanced at the corpse and directly used [Speak with Dead].

The blood stopped flowing, and the corpse turned its head to look in his direction.

Wu Heng asked, "Was anyone else involved in the assassination attempt on me last night?"

The corpse answered, "No."

"Are there any other survivors from the Bloodhand Pirates?"

"I don't know."

It seemed that this entire matter only involved these two individuals.

This crisis was now resolved.

Wu Heng sat on a nearby crate and casually asked, "Why did you come back to seek revenge on me?"

The corpse remained silent for two or three seconds before saying, "I suddenly received a letter, and it told me to avenge the Bloodhand Captain."

Wu Heng's eyes sharpened, and a chill ran down his spine.

Someone had lured him, risking danger, to Gold-Silver Island to seek revenge on Wu Heng.

There was another person involved.

"Who sent you the letter?" Wu Heng asked further.

"I don't know!"

One last question.

Wu Heng paused to think.

He asked, "How did you receive the letter?"

The corpse replied, "I found it under my pillow when I woke up the next day."

The five questions ended, and the corpse returned to the floor, with blood flowing once again from its chest.

Wu Heng stared at the body, unmoving for a long time.

He had traced this situation, only to uncover another person who had written a letter.

Moreover, why hadn't the letter writer targeted others, or sought revenge against 'Sheila Grey'?

Why specifically target him?

Right, he was the one who killed the Bloodhand Captain; others were just participants at most.

Did the letter writer truly want revenge for the Bloodhand Pirates, or was it a personal vendetta against him?

Such strange things were often used by the Secret Cult.

Could it be related to them?

"Search his body for anything useful," Wu Heng said.

Blood Axe set his axe aside, pulled open the corpse's clothing, and started searching.

He found a money pouch.

Continuing to search the cabin, they found a backpack.

Inside, besides some personal items, there was a blank envelope.

Wu Heng held it in his hand, frowning deeply.

He opened the envelope and shook out the letter inside; it was completely blank, not a single word written.

"Damn it!"

Wu Heng flipped his hand and took out another envelope from his spatial ring.

The two were identical.

The letter he held was one of the notes he got after killing the Bloodhand Pirates, taken from the Consortium's treasures.

They were exactly the same.

What was going on?

Tap, tap, tap~!

At that moment, footsteps sounded from the stairs.

Wu Heng put away the loot and saw Moya coming down with a team from the Guild.

Moya and the others relaxed when they saw Wu Heng was unharmed.

If a Deputy Steward of the Guild died here,

it would become a joke if the news got out.

After checking on Wu Heng, they turned their attention to the corpse beside him.

"Was he the mastermind?" Moya asked.

Wu Heng nodded, "He was from the Bloodhand Pirates, here to avenge his captain."

Guild members facing retaliation wasn't uncommon.

It happened regularly.

One reason for the Guild's long-distance assignments was to avoid reprisals.

"Leave this to them. I'll take you back to report everything to the Steward," Moya suggested.

"Alright."

Leaving the cleanup to the other teams, Wu Heng and the elf assistant disembarked from the cargo ship.

They boarded a carriage for the return trip.

...…

The carriage creaked as it moved.

Wu Heng looked at Moya across from him, "Is there a way to send letters over long distances?"

"Feeling homesick? Didn't you bring your family along?" Moya smiled.

"Any items that can be sent directly to someone?" Wu Heng asked.

Moya thought for a moment, "There's no magical item like that currently, or the Guild would be using it. To achieve what you're describing, it would probably have to be some kind of rare artifact."

"Yeah, that makes sense."

It seemed that Moya also didn't know anything about the letter.

Moya continued, "If you're feeling pressured, take a few days off."

"Thanks."

The carriage continued on.

They chatted about other topics.

...…

The Old Barrel Tavern.

In the half-underground room.

Macintosh of the Bermura Tribe sat behind a wooden desk, trimming the flowers in her potted plants.

Tap, tap, tap~!

Rapid footsteps echoed.

A man in a leather vest, exposing his arms, ran in quickly.

Entering the room, he gave a slight bow.

"Chief!"

"What's wrong? Why are you in such a rush?" The woman continued tending to her plants, her tone calm.

"The two from the Guild have left the port."

"So quickly? Did they find that half-spider man?" the woman asked.

"They did. The half-spider's body was carried out, smashed to pieces in spider form," the man replied.

"Oh? How many did the Guild send?"

"The Guild's teams arrived later." The man hesitated, then continued, "I asked those in the cabin; it was that black-haired man and his two followers who killed the half-spider. I also heard that the man is a Deputy Steward of the Guild."

The woman paused her trimming and turned, her eyes filled with curiosity.

"That human is the new Deputy Steward of the Guild?"

"Seems like it."

The woman pondered for a while.

Finally, she spoke, "Got it. Let's get the port back in order, and don't spread anything about the Guild's involvement."

"Yes, Chief." The man hesitated and then asked, "Should we gather information on this new Deputy Steward?"

The woman shook her head, "No need for now. Don't provoke the Guild; Imiro isn't as gentle as he seems."

"Understood."

The man bowed again and left the room.

...…

Back at the Guild.

Moya returned to the Steward's study to report the recent events.

Wu Heng went directly back to his office.

He pushed open the door.

Andviel was at the desk organizing documents, while Minnie was sprawled on the sofa, reading a comic book.

Her legs swung back and forth.

Last night's incident hadn't affected the two at all.

After all, they'd been unconscious the whole time and had no idea what had happened.

Minnie even claimed it was the best sleep she'd ever had.

When they saw Wu Heng enter, both girls smiled.

"Master!"

"Master, you're back!"

Wu Heng sat down in front of the sofa, resting his hand on Minnie's perky rear.

Minnie didn't mind and wiggled a bit.

Andviel asked, "Master, did you catch those people?"

"Yes," Wu Heng replied.

The matter of the blank letter still had no leads.

But the person clearly didn't want to show themselves.

The half-spider and the pirate who tried to kill him were dead, so it was relatively safe for now.

"Good," Andviel said.

She continued, "The renovation crew has gone over; by tonight, we should be able to move back in."

That morning, before leaving the Guild,

Wu Heng had asked Andviel to contact a renovation crew to fix the damage to the house and clean up all the rooms.

After all, they still needed to live there; last night's events didn't mean they had to move again.

"Alright," Wu Heng nodded.

Minnie sat up, curling her legs on the sofa, and asked, "Master, who was trying to kill us last night?"

"Pirates, coming back to avenge their captain."

"Huh? How did a pirate get on the island?" Minnie asked further.

"As long as a pirate isn't on a wanted list, they're basically the same as sailors, and it's hard to tell them apart," Wu Heng sipped his water and added, "And it wasn't even him who attacked; he hired an assassin."

"Oh, too bad we were asleep; otherwise, we could have helped you."

"Damn bad guys, trying to assassinate us," Minnie said angrily, then clung to Wu Heng's arm and cooed, "But Master is so amazing; nothing happened at all."

"Of course, you know how tough I am."

"Hehe! You sure are."

...…

Knock, knock, knock~!

The door was knocked on.

"Come in!"

The door opened, and a staff member walked in with a brown leather bag.

"Deputy Steward, these are the spoils brought back by the team. Moya sent me to deliver them to you."
