Chapter 36 - Happy Birthday

Dream watched.

He watched a nation being born. Five standing against the greater power.

He watched as peace danced at the edge of war. The careful balance of power was being tilted.

It wasn't long before Wilbur voiced his idea to the others.

And so it began. Revolution.

L'Manburg was born.

At the name, Dream saw something from his memories. A symbol. A flag being burned. He didn't know what it meant, but it didn't bode well for the new nation. He only hoped that he could keep that from happening. They deserved to have freedom. Everyone did. The other Dream was a true tyrant, trying to enforce his will on everyone else just because he was stronger.

But they would stop it. Of this Dream was certain. The new European nation would be free. And if they couldn't do it themselves, Dream would help. Somehow.

Dream watched over them as they began to build a wall to mark their territory. Trouble would come, and it would come soon. The other Dream wouldn't allow them to just continue like this.

Sure enough, it wasn't long before the other Dream got notified of what they were doing, and came to talk to them.

Dream wasn't sure what he would do first. The others weren't exactly happy with the other Dream for abusing the title of the most powerful man on the server, and the other Dream didn't want to have to fight to decide every little thing. He wasn't taking L'Manburg as seriously as he should have.

Someday, he would see. The Europeans would not just be pushed around.

The first thing Dream tried was to entice Tommy away. Even though it didn't work, it planted a small seed of doubt it Wilbur's mind.

After all, why Tommy? What had he done? Tommy had done pretty much nothing to assist the overall cause. Though... That could be exactly why. How did they know that Tommy was truly committed?

Wilbur voiced his concerns, and even though Tommy didn't take him seriously at first, Wilbur persisted. Eventually, Tommy was able to convince Wilbur that he wouldn't turn on them, at least for now.

But what happened next strained that thin trust.

Tommy noticed Alyssa setting fire to their land. After calling for Wilbur, Tommy began his pursuit. She fled back to the path with Tommy chasing her down to kill her. Soon, though, she got spooked and logged out before Tommy could kill her. When Wilbur caught up to Tommy as he waited for Alyssa to rejoin, he convinced him to remove his armor, and talk instead of using violence.

Dream nodded approvingly. If they were peaceful, then maybe they could bargain with the other Dream, but if they tried to use force to get their nation's freedom, well, they were severely out-geared, and out-skilled as well. Speaking plainly, the other Dream would crush them with his allies. This was the only way.

Tommy agreed when Wilbur insisted, but then when Alyssa logged back on and tried to run, Tommy killed her anyway.

Dream ground his teeth. Couldn't he see? They needed to take care of their nation, and they couldn't do that by fighting. At least, not for long. Nations founded in blood drowned in it.

Tommy was being foolish. Again. He needed to stay out of conflicts. Maybe this was why Dream had come back to protect him. Hadn't that been his goal?

No. His goal had been to repair... Something. Something was broken, and he needed to fix it.

But he couldn't remember what. Maybe it was this. This relationship between Tommy and Wilbur. No, that couldn't be right. It would have triggered a memory if it was.

No, he had another goal. But these two were involved. He would just have to hope that they could remain together. One of the most powerful cards to have was the one that no one knew about. And just like in a game of cards, this was about strategy. The Nightmare against whatever he could come up with.

Dream against the Nightmare.

Only one could truly prevail in the end.
