Inside the sky scrapper hospital building that afternoon, Marlon, his path still blocked by Sonia who was not willing to let him access Nadia Browne in the patient's room to deliver the bunch of roses, smiling indifferently he stated.
"I don't mean to brag, but I'm an excellent in between your best friend's thighs."
His indirect aim was to prove a point to Sonia that, however much Nadia was married, their bodies were still magnetic and every time the two came close, it was very difficult to repell.
"I am that burning fire, and your best friend is gee.... whenever we get close, obviously she melts," he bragged more, proving Sonia that even that night at the club, he got served.
On downcast eyes, "thanks for creating awareness," Sonia realised that all her efforts, aimed at protecting her best friend's marriage were out of the window, wasted.
As courageous as she had stood, firmly with ten toes down, dedicated to make a safe net, all in the image of protecting her best friend's pride, "now I know better," down in the mouth she said, "the only person worth my trust and fighting for is myself."
Too embarrassed to even open her mouth to speak again, Sonia turned around and found her way out of Marlon's sight, so hurting.
Mentally, as she was walking away, a memory vividly resurfaced. "I still regret all the time I wasted hoping for the future with that good for nothing fool Marlon _ his chapter in my life was long closed!" Sonia recalled the energy, conviction and confidence which displayed in Nadia Browne's eyes while she expressed how she felt about Marlon by then amidst sipping on glasses half filled with red wine at the after party of her wedding.
"I believe you," Sonia recalled drinking a toast to her best friend with a supportive reply that evening.
Marlon, a remorseless killer of joy, sentenced Sonia to a sad afternoon. He snickered at her downcast look as she turned around to leave in despair.
However, a thick-skin smile which made him look like he never cared did not linger for long on his face.
At the back of his mind as Sonia walked, "her beauty was so unique every time she smiled at me. On top of that, the heavy rains of love she used to shower me became a haunting memory that keeps ringing a bell in my head day and night. Funny how all the ladies I kept wasting my time chasing didn't even match the level of her romance. Am just a fool who became over confident and took advantage of the fact that your best friend loved me to the bone, and I did all stupid stuff, taking her feelings for granted."
"Truth be told Sonia, I can't be that same fool to loose twice," deep inside, Marlon regretted loosing Nadia Browne.
Not until Sonia went out of his sight, his eyes stuck on her back side.
On bed sitting so relaxed, Nadia Browne was busy with eyes closed, smiling with nose up, inhaling the scent of flower gifts which were brought by well wishers to wish her a quick recovery.
Suddenly, Sonia pushed and bumped inside the patient room.
"Don't say you didn't do it, I know you did it!" In a quick and very serious confrontation, she attacked her.
Sonia's mind had teemed with a hundred hurts and angers and you could hear it in her voice.
Sonia's sudden mad approach startled Nadia Browne, getting her in a state of confusion.
"Did what?!" She asked wondering.
"You and your ex boyfriend Marlon at the club that night! Don't you deny that your pants did not slide off you legs for him _ I know how only a snap of his finger can makes you loose your senses!" Said Sonia out of rage.
The bed on which Nadia was seated felt like a hot pan at the moment, and her eyes which were lifted with a bold strike, dropped in guilt. Her facial expression was a surprising clarity.
However, Sonia's rage rarely lasted more than a few minutes. So she sighed to calm her attitude down.
When she noticed Nadia's guilty reaction, she didn't need to ask any further. With an expression of disappointment she spoke, "You're a married woman for heavens sake Nadia!"
....
"How did you get to know this?" Out of worry, Nadia Browne inquired.
"Does it even matter?" Sonia carelessly uttered.
Nadia Browne had no room for an excuse as she always did.
"Am sorry...." For the first time in their entire friendship, Nadia Browne apologized for her mistake.
Outside the patient room, Marlon, Nadia's ex boyfriend approached. As he was about to push the slightly open door and enter inside, he overheard Nadia Browne apologizing, which was intriguing. He stopped a little bit by the door to listen for a little while.
Neither Sonia nor Nadia Browne sensed the presence of any motion at the entrance. Their conversation continued.
"You think a sorry is going to save you from this mess?! Seeing Marlon showing up here with a bunch of your favorite flowers was a shock to me _ a joke I last expected!" Stated Sonia.
"Are you serious about this?" Nadia raised her face and set a concerned eye on Sonia.
"No, am not!" Sonia replied with an attitude. "Do you think this is a matter to start jokes about?"
Nadia Browne shrunk more in worries on bed where she was sitting.
Sonia couldn't wait to remind her, "before you love bombed Bob Lee to blind fold him out of his marriage with your naked weapon, I knew this day was to come and warned you but you did not consider my advise."
"You can't blame me for that, I was in love!"
"Cut the crap Nadia! You and I know Bob Lee was just a rebound when Marlon abandoned you...! And the day you announced you were planning to wed with him, my words were not at all in support of it if you can remember!"
"..." Nadia was speechless.
"I knew how much you love Marlon however careless he keeped treating you!"
"I don't love Marlon anymore," defensively, Nadia replied.
"And now that you had sex with him, damn!" Sonia's facial expression was just enough to tell how overwhelmed she was.
"I was all drunk, out of my senses that night," she got an excuse.
"Drunk! What do you mean drunk? Are you going to tell your husband that you got drunk and opened your legs for your ex to enjoy?"
"Of course no...!" With no way to escape the fix, Nadia Browne accepted the defeat, "you are my best friend, instead of crucifying me, just help me out!"
Sonia sighed in disbelief. Exhaustedly, she dropped and sat down on the edge of the bed facing away to show her how the tendency of not listening to her advise displeased her.
"How I wish you could take a single advise of mine... All you've always done is to argue me out, and choose what pleases you."
"Something I need to tell you," Nadia Browne humbled herself.
Wondering what it was, Sonia turned with an inquisitive face, questioning what else Naida had to say after the unthinkable which was already on table.
"Am two weeks pregnant _ the doctor just told me and my husband."
"What?" Sonia exclaimed unbelievably.
Outside the patient room, "hey, are you lost or something?" Bob Lee and friends showed up behind Marlon as he was busy sneaking his ears inside, picking the conversation.
