Chapter 31 - Menu

BOOOOOOOOOM

The blast caused a good shockwave due to the surrounding buildings that echoed back the sound. The explosion grew into a ball of fire about 10-12 meters in size, igniting the ground and part of the building.

Beyond the aforementioned building's corner was Nowak, showing some glowing eyes at the capacity of a piece of paper placed by the wizard. Beside him was Dörk, glowering with amusement and inspiration at the general's reaction. "What did I tell you, eh? I told you, sir." he danced his finger.

The general was puzzled. Anything else the wizard could have shown him, he would have doubted his abilities or even thrown him over the wall, but this... In the general's eyes it was a lamentable advantage. A little jealous that he had just learned of such a thing. "Lenny, why don't we have something like this in our mandatory arsenal?" he said annoyed to the major.

Shocked himself, the major just shook his head. "Hard to say, sir. I know a couple spells here and there, but I'm not sure what this is." he then turns to the wizard. "Did you use any chemicals on that paper?" He asks, raising his eyes.

Dörk just smiles. Bingo! Got their attention! Now it's time for a little hustlin!!! Oh yeah baby!! The Wizard thought. If you concentrated deep enough to read his mind, you could see him swimming in money in his own imagination. "Nothing! Completely odorless and... invisible." Dörk emphasizes the last word, hoping to increase interest.

Bewildered, both army men were flummoxed. "Something like this..." the general blinks a few times. "Should be an army grade tactic. For traps! Or defence..." He sighted sad.

Dörk gives a cough, followed by a positive smile. "Not just that! Not just that! More spells can be encoded." Oh yeah, better spells. "Let's go for a walk."

-------------------------

"Ok... that's it. We're going home boys!"

"HOORAAAAAY!!! THE WAR IS OVER!!!" many soldiers sang for joy, hugging each other and others crying with joy.

"No you fuckers! I meant we're going back to town!" the sergeant in command cut the soldiers off. "Okay, yeah, that came out wrong." which made all the soldiers turn and glare at the man. "Don't fuckin' fuck with me! I'll bury you here, now get a move on!"

The men were dropping the last of the bodies, commenting in secret at the serg, from the wagon and beginning to load the chain armor and the various metals taken from the soldiers. Where a few found silver rings or chains to take back with them.

Rolling my eyes, I just keep digging. "What are you doing, girl? Come. Leave the work for the next shift. Time for a bite to eat, I'm so hungry." says the sergeant briskly, thinking of something to eat. Maybe something that he didn't have here, but easily making himselft rain in his own mouth.

I just nod and shrug, waving goodbye. "Eh, okay. Knock yourself out." Not that I'm responsible for her.

I'd have left if I'd managed to get something to eat, but you were all watching me, you lechers.

Watching the men go off in a hurry towards the large gate of the wall a few hundred meters away, Nyx just starts dragging the bodies into the pit.

One hand underneath, one through the hole in his chest.

One hand underneath, one holding the head split in two.

One hand underneath, one through the man's guts.

And the pattern continued, about 10 more people, later dragging people's halfs and lost hands or legs down and moving to the next pile of dead meat. This is getting gross. He frowned, just from imagining the hundreds of bodies that come next.

But yet, no enemies? What about them? He pulls his head out the pit and shoots a look aloof. Looking over again with more care, Nyx could see some beasts and huge or small bodies, also mangled.

---------------------------

A little over an hour of explaining and the hike to the town infirmary. The old university was deserted along with the rest of the town, with the exception of a few old teachers and people who had no other choice but to stay. It was large enough to house many wounded soldiers from all over the former five battalions, now reduced to four. And here again, Lenny and Nowak were watching the main man work his magic up close. "What are you inscribing now?" Nowak asked.

Dörk puffed out his cheeks at the question. "Well... it's a spell to enchant healing." Off to one side, the wizard worked on a paper larger than before, thin streaks of light coming from his palm like a sprinkler from a watering can, encoding the insignia, the so used glyphs. "This one got more complex. You know, multiple important shits." he gives a happy shrug.

The second in command just couldn't keep his mouth shut. "How does it work?" He knew the spell himself, something simple that could help with minor pains and wounds. Surely yes, he needed practice to do it for himself and comrades, just basics to advance in ranks. "Is it really that useful to put it on parchment?"

But the wizard didn't answer immediately, followed a few seconds later as the small rays of light disappeared. "Okay, it's done. Yeah, sorry, so this. It's the glyph for the 'Heal Wounds' spell. It's somewhat simple but takes longer to do than the rest" he points at the first mark on the paper. "The other two are just some runes. Eh... they're... complex, in terms of how they work, but bluntly speaking. .. One builds up power, mana/magic or whatever, and the other... eh, sort of, acts like a valve." He gestured with his hands playfully. Not at all simple. "And I just connect them together."

"And it cures you, just like that?" Nowak asks, showing a light gasp on his face. Pulling closer to the 'drawing'... Yes. A ton of horseshit to his comprehension. Scratching his neck, he looked around. Spotting the many soldiers in their beds, some asleep, some awake and watching them, a little apprehensive of their presence in the ward. "How long can the spell keep active?" he questions the wizard.

Dörk showed a little unease to the simple question, but not doubting his ability to put his words together, this time it will not get him left in a ditch. "Well, the spell, the glyph that holds the 'Cure Wounds' spell when activated affects the person instantly. In all, its recharge takes well over an hour." He gets back to his feet, confident in his current position. "Unfortunately the assembly only lasts up to a week. It's slowly eroding the paper."

"Could you put it on a rock or something harder?"

" Yeah, I could. But you try carrying around bricks with you." He says calmly, pulling out a small snicker from the general. "But it's not an endless fountain of magical healing. I checked, it only lasts a week or so. Plus, sleeping on rocks? Really?" he raised an eyebrow in amusement to the major. "I have to say though, it doesn't reattach broken arms or legs. It gradually heals, so serious stuff like bleeding or whatever shit your guys got himself into- the thing isn't going to be fixed all at once."

"Now I'm a little uncertain though." shocking both Dörk and Lenny.

"Eh...?" Dörk sweat drops a little scared towards the general. One minute it was like he was ready to beg for it! Did I fool myself?

"Sir?" the major asks bewildered.

"Yes... maybe. But what do you want in return?" His face turns stoic, cornering the wizard in his own game. "You are already well paid, are you not?"

"Well... Yes, but you see.." Dörk was about to start talking about the necessities and the time and all the hardwork bullshit he wanted to cry about to produce the scrolls for the spell, but Nowak cut him short with not a second later.

"You came prepared already, didn't you? In that case surely you have more scrolls ready to use, yes? Which is fantastic!" he smiles mercilessly at the wizard. "I want 30 beds like this-- No, wait, make it 50. And more to come-- You can start right now really! Is still day so chop-chop." he derogatory talked to the man.

He started to leave the room, but tilts his head at the wizard for one last time. "Ah yes! And tomorrow morning, at 6, come to my office. We'll talk more about your field of expertise." He finished with a smirk.

-----------------------------

Ew! Ew! Ew!

Nyx winced as a soldier's eye ball popped out of the left-half skull as he tried to draw as much blood as he could from the corpse. Oh gods.. I can't wait to get some sleep. Nestling the man beside the other bodies, the golem saw that all of the remaining corpses were still not yet stripped of their body armor. Even so... a group of people were marching down the road.

Sigh... I guess the afternoon shift is already here. He calmly crawls out of the tall pit, as one of the men waved at the golem. Picking up the spear strap from beside a tree trunk and placing it on his back, he marches towards the group. A few of the boys take a second glance at Nyx, nodding at him and chuckling to themselves.

Eh... Nyx rolled his eyes with small feels wary of their 'niceties'.

The man from a few seconds ago had approached first and fixed his helmet firmly in place. "I saw on you this morning. Uh, why you're still around?" he tilted his head back.

Well... Nothing else to do. The golem told himself but only answered the man with a shrug and a blank stare. Walking past them and up the path towards the wall, the man just gives him a look.

Pretty girl... He looks 'her' up and down. Same did the rest of the men, carrying on their snickering. "Okay you broads, knock it off! Back to work!"

Yeah, back to work you fucks...

His irritated thoughts about the men were disrupted when Nyx spotted a mill to his left. The large blades were either broken or missing along with its roof, showing signs of old fire black marks, and a wide field laid between the golem and the mill.

Must been ploughed for harvests.

Reaching down and digging in the dry soil, he pulls up a weed growing alongside many others.

Hmmm... he mutters in his head, imagining what life could be as a simple farmer boy or rancher around these parts, walking all day, digging, feeding cows... flirting with the pretty girl next door. He smiled.

Maybe that was Sam's life... and Kara and Lila's.

He then turned back to the sky, his eyes having no problem looking straight up at the sun beating the land through a hole in the clouds. A short step into the field, Nyx drops onto the mounds of earth, turning his eyes back to the clouds.

Yes... it would have been nice to live like this with them...
