"So, what were you all doing outside?" Aleshia asked as she sat down on the ground next to Ren.
Ren paused, pretending to think, then replied, "Helping the neighbors and such." while examining the things she had set down.
It was clear to Aleshia that Ren was being evasive, so she pressed on. "What were you helping the neighbors with?" she asked, posing the question as innocently as possible.
Ren briefly paused before admitting, "We're hauling out bodies. A guy we know got into trouble with a noble or something." She glanced at Aleshia, suggesting that she would understand the implications.
Aleshia understood what Ren was implying and was surprised by the suggestion. She mulled it over, weighing whether Ren's implication was true or just something said to unsettle her.
It seemed to be both accurate and something said meant to unsettle her. When Aleshia glanced at Ren, it felt as though Ren was waiting for a reaction. Instead, after a while, Ren frowned at her expressionless face. With a slight tsk, Ren mistakenly interpreted Aleshia's demeanor as disinterested. "What can I do to change your expression?" she muttered, her curiosity evident.
Aleshia didn't hear what Ren said and leaned in closer. She also used that action to prove her interest, aware that she couldn't use facial expressions to show it. "Can you tell me who died and who did it?" she asked. Then she quickly added, "But it's okay if you can't tell anyone."
"Nah, it's fine. I wasn't paid enough for complete silence since we have an important guest here. So…" Ren averted her gaze and turned her back to Aleshia. "You didn't hear this from me, but among the bodies we found, there looked to be a noble boy. Of course, we took what was on him, but we still need to wait for Daniel to examine the items before we can use his connections to sell them."
"Oh wow, that's pretty serious, isn't it?" Aleshia remarked. She found Ren's behavior suspicious but suspected that it was something the girl had always wanted to do, considering how strangely practiced she seemed.
Despite Ren's peculiar behavior, Aleshia continued to gather information. From Ren, she learned that an adventurer had brought ruin to the noble house of a young lord. Aleshia inferred that this had led to significant unrest among the people, particularly in the region governed by the lord. This turmoil would damage their reputation, given the sudden deaths and the fact an adventurer had gone 'rogue.'
Although Aleshia found this information intriguing, she did not expect she could use it in the coming weeks, given she would be preoccupied at the camp tending to Daniel's siblings, who were still under a curse.
