Aiden's breathing came ragged, every breath burning in his lungs, as he tried to make sense of the voice, of the man—thing—sitting before him. The abyss felt alive, pressing into his skin like liquid shadow, and every instinct he had screamed danger.
"What…? What are you talking about?" Aiden rasped, his voice hoarse and cracking as he lifted his head toward the figure.
The man on the throne stood slowly, each movement exuding a sickening grace and authority. His armor shimmered like wet obsidian, glimmering red in its fissures as if it were bleeding light from within. Eyes like pits of endless black stared into Aiden's soul.
"I asked," the figure said coldly, "how you have my power without my permission."
He stepped forward, every footfall echoing like a bell toll in the void. His presence was consuming, and his aura pierced deeper than just fear—it carved into the very concept of self.
"In fact…" he continued, voice deep with contempt, "what even are you? I've never seen such a disgusting… thing."
Aiden's body trembled—not from pain, but from the pressure. This wasn't magic. This wasn't ki, or aura, or any sort of identifiable force. It was raw dominion, the kind that warped reality by existing.
Then the dark king narrowed his eyes, not looking at Aiden's physical form, but deeper—into his soul.
And what he saw… disgusted him.
Not a single coherent form. No singular energy. Instead, he saw chaos incarnate—a mess of radiant, swirling colors, raw and primal. Fire. Ice. Lightning. Light. Shadow. Wind. Earth. Poison. So many elements weaving together in a rainbow of uncontrolled potential, with black swimming among them like rot in a wound.
"I…" Aiden stammered, head pounding. "How did I get here? What powers? What are you—"
"PAY ATTENTION, FOOL." the figure barked, and with a sudden swipe, he reached into the abyssal ground and pulled.
From the depths rose a massive, jagged black blade—dripping with sentient shadow.
Aiden's eyes widened, a memory clawing at the edge of his mind. "That… that's the Necrosword…"
"Very good," the figure nodded with disdain. "The Necrosword. My sword. And yet… you wield a near-perfect copy."
He swung it once, casually, and the entire realm shuddered with the motion.
"You hold its power," he said, narrowing his eyes again. "Not quite mine, not fully—but a fractured reflection. An echo. A lie."
Aiden looked around, heart racing. Just minutes ago, he was locked in a war with a cosmic god. Now he was shackled in a plane of living darkness, being interrogated by a creature worse than anything he had felt before.
"I… I don't know what to say…"
The figure smirked and stepped back. "Let me guess. An alternate Earth?" He scoffed. "Yes, of course. I already knew. I only asked to see what you would say. But what I don't know is…"
His gaze narrowed further. "What are you really?"
Aiden lifted his chin. He was terrified—but not broken. "I'm Aiden. Aiden Blake. A human from Earth. A hero. That planet is my home… and I protect it."
"Human?" the King of Black laughed bitterly. "Oh no, child. You may wear human skin, but you are not one of them. You are something beyond that. Something alien to this plane. A vacuum. A vessel. A collector of power, absorbing the very essence of everything you touch and warping it to fit you."
He spread his arms wide, a gesture grand and terrifying.
"You are a perfect being. An unnatural anomaly. A glitch in a decaying multiverse."
"And I want you."
Aiden blinked. "Yeah? Too bad. You'll have to get in line. Galactus is laying claim on me right now."
The throne-room trembled with the King's laughter. "Galactus? That withering fossil from the last cosmos? He noticed you too? How amusing. No matter. I've already begun neutralizing him. You see… I don't need you whole. I just need your body. And once I have it, I will escape his grasp."
"What… my body? What the hell are you talking about?" Aiden shouted, straining against the chains. "Who said anything about escape? I'm gonna beat Galactus. That's my goal."
"Oh? Is that so?" The Dark King paused, before erupting in sudden, thunderous fury.
"AND WHY THE FUCK WOULD I CARE ABOUT YOUR AMBITIONS?!" he roared, voice cracking the very abyss. "DO I LOOK LIKE I GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOUR PETTY DESIRES?! I will have your body. And when I do—"
"Damn you!" Aiden snapped. "I have to save my people! My family! You think I'll just let you take me?!"
"Oh?" the King smirked cruelly. "Your people? Your family? It won't matter. Your body is already fighting them… probably killed them by now."
He leaned closer.
"Just sit still, little one. Your body will return to me soon enough. Forget your world. Forget your purpose. You are mine now. My pet."
Something snapped.
Aiden's mind burned—not with fear, but rage. His veins lit up in vibrant colors—red, blue, green, gold, black, white—glowing like fire beneath his skin. His shackles trembled.
"Oh?" Knull tilted his head, intrigued. "Even your mind can channel it? Fascinating."
He peered deeper, watching Aiden's soul contort and thrash. "It won't matter. Those chains bind concepts. They—"
A deafening crack interrupted him. The chains on Aiden's wrists shattered. Then his legs. Then his neck.
A blinding surge of color exploded outward, and with a flash, Aiden's form disintegrated—his soul ripping free of the Abyss and racing back toward his body.
Knull stood frozen, utterly still.
He looked down at the shattered remains of his chains.
"…He escaped."
His hand twitched.
"He escaped… The Chains of Darkness."
His voice dropped to a reverent whisper.
"Not even Death… escapes those chains."
And then, after a long pause, he laughed.
A deep, joyless, terrifying laugh.
"It's him…" he said. "He is the answer. My solution. My escape from eternity."
He turned back to his throne, eyes now wild with twisted wonder.
"He is what's needed to destroy this multiverse… and the madness that infects it."
