Chapter 10 - The Fifth Year

The morning sun filtered through the grand windows of the Altair estate, casting a warm, golden glow over the festivities. Today was my fifth birthday, a milestone in any child's life, but particularly significant for those born into noble houses. The air was filled with the scent of freshly baked pastries and the sound of laughter from family and friends who had gathered to celebrate.

My mother and father had spared no expense in making the day special. The grand dining hall was decorated with vibrant banners and flowers, and a large table was laden with an array of delicious foods and treats. My siblings were all there, their faces beaming with pride and excitement.

As I mingled with the guests, receiving their well-wishes and gifts, I couldn't help but feel a mixture of joy and nervous anticipation. My parents had hinted that they had something important to discuss with me after the celebration, and I couldn't shake the feeling that it was something significant.

After the last of the guests had departed and the remnants of the celebration were being cleared away, my parents called me into my father's study. The room was filled with the rich scent of leather-bound books and the soft glow of lamplight.

"Aric," my father began, his voice steady and calm, "today marks a very important day in your life. Not just because it's your birthday, but because it signifies the beginning of your journey as a mage."

My mother nodded, her eyes filled with warmth and encouragement. "Tomorrow, you will be tested for your magic type. It's a tradition in our family and among the nobility. This test will reveal whether you have the potential for light, dark, void, or twilight magic."

I swallowed hard, the weight of their words sinking in. I had known this day was coming, but now that it was here, I felt a mix of excitement and fear. "What if...what if I don't have any magic?" I asked quietly, voicing my deepest concern.

My father's expression softened, and he knelt down to look me in the eye. "Aric, you are an Altair. Our family has a long history of powerful mages, but more importantly, we have always been a family that values each member for who they are, not just for their magical abilities."

My mother placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. "We believe in you, Aric. No matter the outcome of the test, know that we are proud of you and that you have a bright future ahead."

Their words gave me a sense of comfort and resolve. I took a deep breath and nodded. "I understand. I'll do my best."

That night, as I lay in bed, I couldn't help but think about the possibilities. I imagined what it would be like to wield light magic like Aiden and Elara, or to command the shadows like Lucian. And then there was the tantalizing prospect of being a twilight mage, a rare and revered ability that combined both light and dark.

Sleep came slowly as my mind raced with thoughts of what the future might hold. The next day would be the beginning of a new chapter in my life, one that would shape my destiny in ways I couldn't yet comprehend.

But no matter what happened, I knew that I had the support and love of my family. And with that, I felt a sense of peace as I drifted off to sleep, ready to face whatever the dawn would bring.
