Chapter 16 - Chapter 13

The soft hum of morning life in Cambridge filled my dorm room as the sunlight filtered through the old-fashioned windows, painting golden streaks across my desk. My time here had been transformative—academically, emotionally, and personally. I had rebuilt myself, stepping out of the shadows of betrayal and family turmoil, forging my own path. But as my final term approached, the reality of what came next loomed closer.

Darren and I had grown inseparable, our relationship deepening in a way I never thought possible. He was my rock, my constant source of support, and the love that had once seemed like a distant dream was now something tangible, something real.

"You're thinking too hard again," Darren's voice pulled me from my thoughts as he leaned against the doorway with a knowing smile.

I smirked. "Maybe."

He walked over, resting his hands on my shoulders as he kneaded away the tension. "Let me guess—thinking about what's next? About what happens after graduation?"

I sighed, leaning back into him. "Yeah. It's all happening so fast."

Darren pressed a kiss to my temple. "Then let's take it one step at a time. What do you want, Elise? Not what's expected of you, not what anyone else thinks—what do you want?"

I turned to face him, searching his green eyes for the reassurance I always found there. "I want to make a difference. I want to build something meaningful, something that doesn't just exist because of my mother's legacy."

"And you will," he said, brushing a stray strand of hair from my face. "You don't have to have it all figured out right now."

I exhaled, allowing his words to settle. "I guess I'm just afraid of making the wrong choice."

Darren tilted my chin up, making sure I was looking directly at him. "Elise, you've survived everything life has thrown at you. You're stronger than you realize. Whatever path you choose, you'll own it."

I smiled softly. "How did I get so lucky with you?"

He chuckled. "I think we both got lucky."

Later that week, I received an unexpected call from Alaine. Ever since appointing her as CEO, we had remained in close contact, but something in her voice told me this wasn't just a routine update.

"Elise, I need you to come to London. We have some matters to discuss—important ones."

The urgency in her tone sent a jolt of anxiety through me. "Is something wrong?"

"Not wrong, but it's something you need to be a part of. Trust me."

I didn't hesitate. "I'll be there tomorrow."

The next morning, I took the train to London, my nerves coiled tight. Alaine met me at Bellamy Enterprises, her expression unreadable. She led me to a private conference room where a thick folder sat waiting on the table.

"What's this?" I asked, taking a seat.

Alaine slid the folder toward me. "Your future, if you're ready for it."

I opened it, my eyes scanning the documents inside—proposals, business plans, strategic expansions. Everything meticulously laid out for the next phase of the company. And at the very top, a letter from my mother.

My breath caught as I read the words she had written for me, long before she passed.

My dearest Elise,

By now, you are a woman standing at the crossroads of your life. I had so many dreams for you, and while I may not be here to see them unfold, I trust that you will find your way. This company, this legacy—it is yours to shape. Whether you choose to lead it, expand it, or forge a new path entirely, know that I built this not just for myself, but for you.

You are stronger than you know. You have your father's resilience and my determination, and with that, there is nothing you cannot do. Trust yourself. Follow your heart. The world is waiting for you, my love.

With all my love,

Your Mother, Anaïs

Tears blurred my vision as I traced the ink on the paper, my mother's words wrapping around me like an embrace from beyond time.

Alaine spoke gently. "Your mother wanted you to have the final say on the company's direction. This is your chance to decide what Bellamy Enterprises will become."

I took a deep breath, the weight of the decision settling in my chest. But this time, it didn't feel overwhelming. It felt like purpose.

"I'm ready," I said finally, lifting my gaze to meet Alaine's. "Let's build something new."

That evening, I returned to Cambridge, my mind still spinning from the conversation with Alaine. Darren met me at the station, his expression instantly shifting to concern as he took in my thoughtful silence.

"Everything okay?" he asked, gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

I nodded, exhaling. "Yeah. Just a lot to think about."

He studied me for a moment before taking my hand. "You don't have to do it alone, you know. Whatever you decide, I'm here."

I smiled, squeezing his hand. "I know. And that means everything."

As we walked back through the quiet, cobbled streets, I realized something profound.

For so long, I had been fighting—to prove myself, to claim my place, to survive. But now, for the first time, I wasn't just surviving.

I was thriving.

And I was finally ready to embrace the future waiting for me.
