They all fell silent as soon as Samael finished explaining what was happening to Madeleine. In that heavy pause, disbelief and dread mingled in every eye. No one could immediately accept what he had said.
"To tell you the truth, I did not know how long she would remain in this state—or if she would ever wake up. I have witnessed similar cases in many different lands, but I have never seen anything like this: people awakening after what seems like a death," he explained in a measured, almost clinical tone.
At those words, Lyle's fist clenched until his knuckles blanched. With a burst of raw anger, he advanced on Samael, seizing the man's shoulders and pinning him against the sofa. "Do not say anything about death! She will not die! No, I will not let her!" he screamed, his voice reverberating in the room.
