Chapter 558 - Chapter 558: Cavalry Breakthrough

Alaric's words undoubtedly comforted Wendessa a lot, and after that, the typically silent Garona gave her shoulder a reassuring pat.

"You'll do fine," she promised. "When everything begins, you won't even have time to think about these things."

Although Garona left immediately after speaking, skillfully vanishing from sight, her words still left Wendessa feeling warmed inside.

For the first time, Wendessa felt that maybe she and this half-orc could become good friends.

Arathi Highlands was not a vast, endless plain. While the terrain wasn't particularly complex, it wasn't simple either.

The Alliance, who had arrived on the battlefield first, occupied a series of hills. The elevated position allowed both archers and cavalry to exert greater effectiveness.

As a high-ranking member of the Alliance, Alaric didn't coordinate with Varian Wrynn in the center of the battlefield but personally led a group of guards to the highest hill to observe the enemy's movements.

As they got closer to the Horde's position, Wendessa could see, in the distance, a crude camp where many green figures were gathering on one side, exiting the camp and beginning to move toward the hills.

"They're almost ready to form ranks," Wendessa immediately forgot her nervousness and reported.

Her keen elven eyes allowed her to see farther than the others.

She turned to Alaric. "We'd better have our forces prepare for battle."

Alaric nodded, giving orders. Once the messenger left, he turned back to Wendessa with a slight smile.

Wendessa felt slightly nervous at his smile, stammering, "Wh…what's wrong? Why…why are you smiling like that?"

"Nothing, just thinking you have some real talent," Alaric explained with a grin.

"Earlier you were nervous, but when you saw the enemy, you immediately forgot the anxiety and started fulfilling your duties. Not many new recruits can do that."

"Th...that's not such a big deal," Wendessa muttered, her face starting to flush from the sudden praise. She quickly added, "I'll go continue the reconnaissance," before hastily walking away.

Watching the elven ranger disappear into the distance, Onyxia, standing behind Alaric, couldn't help but curl her lip.

"She's just a rookie ranger, barely able to block my dragon breath. Why are you making such a big deal out of her? Is it because of her sister?"

"Don't say that," Alaric shook his head. "Wendessa really does have talent. Don't underestimate the Windrunners."

"Is that so?" Onyxia sounded doubtful. "Well, the Windrunner sisters are indeed very beautiful."

"She's just a maid; don't start lecturing the master," Alaric wisely changed the subject as he noticed his mother, the black dragon, growing jealous.

As the Horde approached, the Alliance soldiers could now clearly see the towering figures of these creatures, wearing heavy breastplates and armed with powerful weapons, running swiftly toward them.

They wielded axes, hammers, swords, and spears. And there were many of them.

Alaric and the others quickly returned to their ranks.

At this point, Varian Wrynn had decided not to give the enemy a chance to fully form up.

"They've arrived on this land," the paragon of warriors shouted, lifting his enormous greatsword high, its golden runes shimmering with light.

"Charge! For Lordaeron!" He spurred his horse forward, breaking through the Alliance ranks, his shield bearing the golden lion emblem glowing in the light.

Alaric didn't follow the commander's lead. Instead, he casually cast a few buffs on the warrior, then rode his horse, keeping a safe distance behind.

It wasn't yet time for him to make his move.

Behind Varian, the cavalry followed his heroic charge, rushing into the disorganized orc forces.

The ground thundered with the sound of thousands of hooves, the earth vibrating with each stampede.

Even the bloodthirsty orcs, renowned for their combat prowess, found themselves flustered by the overwhelming cavalry charge.

Leading the charge, Varian Wrynn, with the Royal Sword Quel'Salaram in hand, cut through the orcs. The magic from Alaric's spell enhanced the attack far beyond its normal power.

In this area, every orc's body, armor, and weapon were effortlessly sliced in two by the sharp sword.

The warhorse under Varian's command didn't disappoint its rider's reputation, trampling an orc that dared to block the way beneath its hooves.

The orc formation was immediately torn apart by Varian's charge.

Encouraged by their leader's valor, the human cavalrymen found that the feared orcs were no longer such a terrifying sight.

They raised their lances and drove them through the orcish armor with ease, the power of the charge piercing the first line of orcs with little resistance.

Some cavalrymen even pierced through multiple orcs, spearing the second row after breaking through the first.

However, due to the weight of the orcs, the lances were now ineffective, and the cavalrymen quickly swapped to swords, hacking through the orcs.

It was proven once again that in the era of cold steel, heavy cavalry was an unbeatable force on the frontlines, even against powerful foes like the orcs.

With Varian's leadership, they had broken into the fully armed orc ranks, and a single charge had shattered the orc's front line.

From another perspective, this was the failure of the orcs' loose discipline in comparison to the humans' orderly formations.

However, even with their loose discipline, orcs still had their strengths, particularly their bloodlust and warrior spirit.

As the formation broke and the lines were torn apart, the orcs didn't falter like the human soldiers would have in a similar situation.

Many orcs charged toward Varian's horse, intent on dragging the commander down and tearing him to pieces.

Alaric saw this and shook his head, urging his horse toward Varian's position, with Onyxia and Wendessa following behind.

Several orcs tried to block their path, but Wendessa shot the lead orc with a single arrow, and Onyxia gathered a massive fireball in her hands.

With a wave, the fireball shot into the orcs' ranks, exploding on impact and turning several orcs into charred remains.

Alaric reached Varian's side, and the old warrior now looked at Onyxia with wide eyes. He had initially thought Alaric bringing a maid into battle was a youthful folly, but now.
