Chapter 161: Danzo Root
"Hiruzen," said Danzo as he entered the Hokage's office. "I heard they rejected it."
"Yes, they prefer to stay in Uzushiogakure," Hiruzen replied.
"Damn, those traitors," Danzo said, clearly frustrated.
"They're not traitors. The First Hokage gave them permission to stay in Uzushiogakure," Hiruzen countered.
"Hiruzen," Danzo nearly shouted, "do you know what this means?"
Hiruzen remained silent, just looking at his old friend.
"Uzushiogakure will gain someone with another kekkei genkai while Konoha loses it," Danzo said angrily. "The Chinoike Clan is from Konoha, not Uzushiogakure!"
"So what do you want to do, Danzo?" Hiruzen asked calmly.
"If Konoha can't have this power, then Uzushiogakure shouldn't have it either," Danzo said, turning to leave the room.
"Danzo, stop! You know that will cause another war," Hiruzen warned, trying to stop him.
"Don't worry, Hiruzen. They won't trace it back to Konoha," Danzo replied coldly.
Meanwhile, Hashirama, Tobirama, and Mikoto stood too stunned to speak. They had been watching the scene for a long time, in their spectral or holographic forms, invisible to normal eyes, Sharingan, or Byakugan.
But now, Danzo wanted to kill the last remaining members of the Chinoike Clan.
"Tobirama, I didn't save the Chinoike Clan just for your student to finish them off!" Hashirama shouted, frustrated with how Tobirama's pupil was behaving.
"Shut up, brother! Do you think I taught them this?" Tobirama snapped, even more frustrated than Hashirama.
But there was nothing they could do. They couldn't use chakra, and they couldn't even touch each other in their holographic forms.
Mikoto, also a member of the Chinoike Clan, was equally frustrated. How could her former teammate decide to end the lives of her clan?
---Escape the Ambush---
After leaving Konoha's gate, Kagami and his wife headed toward the place they had promised to meet their teacher earlier.
"Sensei," Kagami greeted.
"How was the funeral?" asked Setsuna.
"It was sad," Chino said softly.
"My condolences," replied Setsuna.
"It's okay, Sensei. The other clan members have already left Konoha," Chino smiled.
Suddenly, Setsuna turned toward the direction of Konoha.
"Forty people have followed you here," Setsuna warned.
Chino and Kagami immediately grew alert, especially Kagami, who had followed his teacher to another planet. He now understood the depths of greed and how people could be killed because of politics.
"Who are they, Sensei?" asked Chino.
"They're from Konoha, all elite Jonin," replied Setsuna. "Did something happen inside Konoha?"
"Yes, the Hokage asked us to stay and live there," said Kagami.
"We will leave here using my Kamui ability," said Setsuna.
"Sensei, we are very strong. Why not confront them first?" asked Kagami.
"Have you forgotten? My identity must remain secret. Those people cannot know that I still look young and am stronger than before," Setsuna reminded him.
"Okay, Sensei," Kagami said, grabbing his wife's hand and then placing a hand on his sensei's eyes before teleporting to Uzushiogakure.
Ten minutes later...
"Their presence ended here. Be ready; they are most likely hiding," said one of the Elite Root members.
But even after thirty minutes, they couldn't find them anywhere.
"It looks like they managed to escape," said the Elite Root member before ordering the others to return to Konoha.
---Danzo Shocked ---
"What? They escaped?" said Danzo, shocked.
"Yes, Danzo-sama," replied the team leader.
"How could they leave the Land of Fire so easily?" Danzo questioned. "Do they know a space-time ninjutsu?"
"We don't know for sure, but based on our investigation, their trail ended at one point. We tried searching the surrounding area, but we found nothing," reported the leader.
"You're dismissed," said Danzo.
Danzo was sharp this time. He sensed something was amiss. Deciding to report it to Hiruzen, he quickly headed to the Hokage's office.
"Hiruzen!" Danzo burst in without even knocking.
Hiruzen frowned at Danzo's behavior.
"You... I'm the Hokage," said Hiruzen, irritated.
"Hmph... It was just our teacher's whim to choose you," Danzo retorted.
Hiruzen knew Danzo had always wanted the Hokage position. Every now and then, Danzo would show this side of himself.
"What do you want?" Hiruzen asked.
"I suspect Uchiha Setsuna has learned space-time ninjutsu," replied Danzo.
"Uchiha Setsuna? How do you know about that?" asked Hiruzen.
"Root was following Uchiha Kagami's trail, but at one point, they vanished," said Danzo.
"You did what? Why did you order Root to follow them?" Hiruzen asked angrily. If they had escaped while Root ambushed Uchiha Setsuna's student, Uzushiogakure might have launched a war.
Even though Uzushiogakure is small, the real threat lies within Konoha—Uzumaki Mito is watching him closely. That person holds a lot of influence and could even threaten his position.
"Don't worry. They managed to escape before we had the chance to ambush them," Danzo said nonchalantly.
"Danzo!" Hiruzen shouted. "If you don't want to lose your position, don't do this again."
"Hiruzen, you know this isn't the issue. What's important is that Uzushiogakure has learned space-time ninjutsu, the same as our teacher's," Danzo argued.
"You're forgetting something," said Hiruzen. "They already built a teleportation gate. It's not impossible for them to teleport to Uzushiogakure instantly."
"I know that, but those two techniques are different. The gates need to be used for teleportation, but this time they can teleport anywhere," Danzo replied.
"Do you remember what our teacher told us?" Danzo continued. "Uchiha Setsuna learned most of his jutsu because he has the Sharingan."
Before Tobirama passed away, many of his jutsu had been copied by Setsuna. Unlike other Uchiha, Setsuna is on another level compared to Hatake Kakashi. Part of the reason is that he has massive chakra reserves and mastery over all five chakra natures.
"So, what do you want to do about it?" asked Hiruzen.
Danzo fell silent for a moment, unsure of what to say.
Hiruzen continued, "We don't have proof yet that he's learned the same space-time ninjutsu like Sensei. I don't think he has it, because that jutsu requires seals and can't be copied by the Sharingan."
Danzo looked at Hiruzen and finally agreed.
"I understand, but Hiruzen, we really need this teleportation gate. And look—Uchiha Kagami can teleport instantly to Uzushiogakure," said Danzo.
"We still don't know the full truth. For now, just relax and don't do anything rash. Mito-sama is still watching us, and our positions are already on thin ice," replied Hiruzen.
