Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Uncle, does the beauty trap work on you?

Maxwell Peary hadn't enjoyed himself this much in a long time. This little girl was as amusing as ever.

Especially her pouting face and red-rimmed eyes; give her two long ears, and she'd probably look just like Rabina Mitchell.

Nia Mitchell blinked her large, dewy eyes, her mind a bit muddled. "I have good taste."

Nia Mitchell: ...!!!

That's not right!

She shook her head furiously. Why, whenever she met this man, did her brain turn to mush?

"PAH, PAH, PAH! I am not a car thief."

"'Oh?' Maxwell Peary raised an eyebrow, his deep voice penetrating everyone's eardrums, making hearts skip a beat.

"If you're not a car thief, then you certainly shouldn't be wrongly accused."

Having said that, Maxwell Peary turned to look at the Bureau Chief, who was standing behind him, trying his best to be invisible.

"Yes, yes, yes, Young Master Peary is right." The Bureau Chief nodded vigorously, wiping the sweat from his forehead with his hand.

Nia Mitchell swallowed. He seemed rather powerful; even this Bureau Chief was standing behind him, bowing and scraping.

Was that remark he just made meant to help her? Perhaps this man was her destined savior.

Nia Mitchell's eyes darted. In a few quick strides, she scurried over to Maxwell Peary's side, reached out, grabbed his arm, and started shaking it.

"Uncle, could you please get me out of here?"

Forcing her most brilliant smile, she batted her tear-filled eyes at the man, her face a picture of ingratiation, as she intermittently shook his arm.

Hadn't that other man just used his good looks to his advantage? It had worked so well; perhaps if she used her feminine charm, the effect wouldn't be too different.

But her action made those around Maxwell Peary tremble with fear.

Heavens, she actually dared to grab Young Master Peary's arm! Who in this world didn't know that no one was allowed within three steps of him? Not only had this little girl crossed that boundary, but she had even placed her little paws on him! Little girl, if you don't value your life, don't provoke Young Master Peary here! Why don't you take your troublemaking elsewhere? This Police Bureau won't be able to withstand Young Master Peary's wrath!

"Give me a reason."

Maxwell Peary looked down at Nia Mitchell. This ingratiating little expression of hers actually made his heart skip a beat. How many years had it been since he'd felt this way? So unfamiliar!

Bureau Chief: ...!!!

Everyone: ...!!!

Had the world gone mad? Was the man before them still the same Young Master Peary who could call the shots and stir up storms in Capital Town?

A thousand metaphorical alpacas stampeded through Nia Mitchell's mind. A reason? Was he implying she should offer a bribe? But this man's attire, from head to toe, told her he lacked nothing.

"Does being very well-behaved count as a reason?" Nia Mitchell asked, her large, mist-filled eyes wide as she looked up at him.

"AHEM."

Maxwell Peary found it somewhat difficult to hide his smile. Was she trying to act cute?

"Let's go." Maxwell Peary, as if by some strange impulse, took Nia Mitchell's hand and started walking forward.

Bureau Chief Zhang, seeing him finally preparing to leave, was overjoyed. At this point, even if Young Master Peary were taking away a murderer, the Bureau Chief wouldn't dare to stop him.

Her being well-behaved really counted as a reason?

As she was being led outside, Nia Mitchell only registered it belatedly, yet a smile still climbed onto her face. She was finally leaving.

After all, today was her engagement! Thinking about the engagement, she was so happy she began to skip and hop.

Once they stepped out of the Police Bureau, Maxwell Peary suddenly felt his hand go empty.

Nia Mitchell had wriggled free from the man's large hand, feeling a wave of relief. "Uncle, thank you! I have to hurry to my engagement. Goodbye!"

The smile on Maxwell Peary's face vanished instantly. An engagement? This little Rabina already belonged to someone else?
