The demons in the city kept running amuck, terrorising people and making them feel unsafe. We on the other hand were still fugitives trying to complete our mission. We were getting close to the lab facility that Bradely worked at and had one of the dimensional gates.
600 metres to your destination the display read on our digital maps and we had a few heat signatures registered on the map to indicate people were around. Pretty useful at moments such as these. Yet we can't detect demons with this tech, I guess it wasn't prepared for such scenarios that we have found ourselves in.
On our way finding clear paths to take to the lab facility, I remembered what we had discussed with the merchant. He decided to give some of his trinkets he had in his shop which of course they needed but they rather chose weapons that weren't as quick to use as a gun like pistols. rifles, etc.
Donnie got himself a dagger and a combat knife. The dagger was made with a scale from the dragon beast Kravis. He was a feared creature that lived centuries ago, killing the homes of thousands and slaughtering the masses. I didn't care to intervene in such matters for I had other things to do. Anyway, one day some of the lesser beings and the children of the dragon beast who felt pity for the lesser beings band together to take him down. There was bloodshed, yes, and may lost their lives but ultimately they triumphed over him.
The children had taken the scales from his corpse and used them to make the weapons, the methods used weren't recorded and forgotten and some of the weapons had not survived through time. The merchant kindly informed us that the dagger may not look like much but it can cut through the armour of even the toughest demon alive. Very reassuring words.
The combat knife itself is like any other modern warfare weapon just that it had been enchanted with magic. Whatever the magic was, it was used a great deal to toughen blades that can be used to fight demons of all sorts. Just hope he doesn't use it on me. The merchant didn't say much about the combat knife. Maybe it isn't much.
As much as Donnie is a tech guy, he isn't shy to get his dirty. In fact he opted for field work more than just sit at a desk all and he was so ecstatic when he became a soldier. Served well too. He understood what he was doing picking a new weapon and he assessed his options.
Marie, well, she picked an enchanted compound bow that had Grayn arrows as ammunition. The Grayn -a mythical metal mined by the elves centuries prior- was a metal that was used in making weapons for its toughness and easily forged making a prime metal for such a task. Though it was not as abundant as the normal iron, zinc, and other metals, it was incredible valuable.
Making arrows out of it was difficult, not in the sense that it can't be molded that way but in the sense that it can destroy the bow while in use. How? Well, imagine pulling the arrow and string, and the string broke or the limbs of the bow breaking under the stress of pulling the string with the arrow. The former is more reasonable. In other words the arrow was tough but also sharp that the string would snap when pulling back on it. So the bow had to be enchanted to prevent such incidents.
Her reason for picking the bow, I remember reading her file. She took archery in her teens until her twenties. She enjoyed it and she told me about it once before while working together. Apart from being a medic she is a skilled archer and can handle a gun real well. I know I said this before and I am saying it again.
Tarius on the other hand didn't take anything like and for that he said, "These aren't for me." The merchant did take it personally, wonderful artefacts that didn't attain your intrigue. For an angel he was not thinking straight and I wondered what was on his. "You really don't need anything?" I asked looking him in confusion.
"Brother these are not what angels use and I would like to stick to my old tools like you,"
"Well I guess you are pretty old fashioned. By the way, how far did that get you?"
"I shall not answer that question."
Ashamed he was of the decisions he had made so far. I smirked at him. As for his statement, which of course hold to some level, it was not all true. As much as I love Titan Slayer and my pistols, I don't use them a lot more than any other weapon around me. It's better I conceal them and use common guns and whatnot so that I don't stand out. Unlike the day I got Titan Slayer, my pistols were custom made for me like Dante, but they aren't like his.
Then finally I picked out something. I wanted to get out of my suit since it has been making a liability to myself and my team. I looked around the shop and got a black shirt and blue jeans. Trying to be a free in my movement, even though the suits improved strength, speed and movement, I didn't necessarily need it and slowed me down instead. So I wore less of the nanite suit and keep some of the necessary bits of it.
"Well, it seems that I have done my due diligence to offer my services to you all, the one's that actually wanted something, and I would have enjoyed it. Alas, this was not all from the bottom of my heart. So I need a little trade off from you to match the value of your items."
"I knew that it was too good to be true when you said you were just giving these to us,"
"Hehehehe, you're quite sharp, I like that in a customer. Well, yes, a little dishonesty didn't hurt now did it, mate?"
"Hmm, your acting was sublime after all."
I took out some crystals that I had found in the city while you guys weren't looking. Used them to trade. The merchant took them as pay and let us keep the items we got from him and he dropped us off somewhere near the lab facility. And by drop off I mean he let us though the back of his shop out into the city.
"Well, have fun out there. I will be waiting for you," the merchant said and smirked.
Were we where, we hadn't checked but it had no one outside ready and waiting to kill us. I looked at my team, they were a bit shaken after what happened. I checked the corner of the building we were by making sure it was clear and signalled my team. We then moved out.
"Hey, Captain. Thanks for what you did for us back there,"
"Well you can thank me after we get a beer and relax once the mission is complete,"
"Do you think we are going to make it out of here alive,"
"Yeah, we are going to make it. Trust me Donnie."
He felt reassured, they felt reassured. Marie didn't admit but her face said everything. This mission has to be completed and I gotta protect my team. We have known each other for five years before cryo sleep and they ain't going to die on my watch. I need them for something more.
