Chapter 5 - 5

As the sun rose, its gentle rays filtering through the cracks in the cottage's aged shutters, Xiao and Zhulong sat in silence, each lost in their own thoughts. The weight of their actions hung heavy in the air, a palpable reminder of the irreversible consequences of their desperate attempt to alter destiny.

Zhulong broke the silence, his voice tinged with bitterness and remorse. "How could you do that to me, Xiao? To manipulate my mind like that..." His words trailed off, a mixture of accusation and anguish.

Xiao met his gaze, his own heart heavy with guilt. "I thought I could change things," he admitted softly. "For all of us. I wanted to spare our family from further tragedy."

"But instead, you made me... a puppet," Zhulong murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "I killed my own father."

The words hung between them, echoing in the stillness of the cottage. Xiao struggled to find the right response, grappling with the enormity of Zhulong's accusation. "I never wanted you to hurt anyone," he said finally, his voice cracking with emotion. "I believed I could control the outcome, but I was wrong."

Zhulong stared at him, torn between anger and sorrow. "What do we do now?" he asked, his voice hoarse with emotion. "How do we face the clan, knowing what I've done?"

"We stay hidden," Xiao replied, his tone resolute. "At least until we understand the full extent of what's happened. We need to gather information, find out how much Xin Cheng's death will change things."

Zhulong nodded slowly, though uncertainty lingered in his eyes. "And if they find us here? If they come for us..."

"We'll deal with it," Xiao asserted, though doubt gnawed at him. He knew they were walking a dangerous path, one that could lead to further tragedy if they weren't careful. But he couldn't turn back now; they had to see this through, for better or worse.

Hours passed as they remained holed up in the cottage, listening anxiously for any sign of pursuit. Outside, the world carried on unaware of the turmoil within. Birds chirped, leaves rustled in the breeze, and life continued despite the upheaval that had shaken Xiao and Zhulong's existence.

As evening approached, Xiao cautiously ventured outside, scanning the surroundings for any hint of danger. The estate appeared quiet, guards patrolling with a heightened vigilance that spoke of Xin Cheng's demise spreading like wildfire through the clan's ranks.

"We need supplies," Xiao murmured upon returning to the cottage, meeting Zhulong's gaze with determination. "Food, water, anything to sustain us until we can make a plan."

Zhulong nodded in agreement, his expression somber. "What about Xin Cheng's body?" he asked quietly. "Shouldn't we... do something?"

Xiao hesitated, torn between the need to honor his father's memory and the urgency of their predicament. "We can't risk being seen," he replied finally, regret coloring his words. "We have to prioritize our safety."

Together, they ventured out under the cover of darkness, navigating the outskirts of the estate with caution. They scavenged what they could from abandoned storerooms and overlooked supplies, gathering enough to sustain them for the immediate future.

As they returned to the cottage, burdened with their makeshift provisions, Xiao couldn't shake the feeling that their time in hiding was rapidly dwindling. The longer they remained hidden, the greater the risk of discovery and the repercussions it would bring.

"We need a plan," Zhulong asserted, his voice steadier now, tempered by resolve. "To confront this head-on. We can't keep running forever."

Xiao nodded, silently agreeing. "We'll find a way," he vowed, though uncertainty gnawed at him. He knew their path ahead was fraught with peril, their actions having set in motion a chain of events that threatened not only their lives but the very fabric of their clan's stability.

As night fell once more, casting a veil of shadows over the cottage and its weary occupants, Xiao and Zhulong sat in silent contemplation. The future loomed uncertain and ominous, yet they clung to a fragile hope that they could yet salvage something from the wreckage of their shattered ambitions.

Together, they began to sketch out a plan—a risky gambit born of desperation and determination—to reclaim control over their destiny and steer their family away from the brink of ruin. Little did they know, the true test of their resolve lay just ahead, waiting to challenge their every decision and reshape their understanding of sacrifice, loyalty, and the relentless pursuit of redemption.
