Sloane may not have known what it was like to be the leader of such an organization, but he did have experiences from his younger years growing up around the Balancers and Watchers, where he lived.
He did get to experience and witness a thing or two from those around him, and he could see how they were struggling at times, which resulted in him joining in to help as soon as he could.
If it was not for such observations and kindness that he had that led him to wish to lend his support and make things easier for them, then he might have spent a lot more of his youth in comfort without needing to put himself in such dangerous situations.
He could have lived a much more carefree and relaxing life during his youth, while he could have gotten to enjoy what other youths his age got to enjoy.
