In short, it was "tribal"... no, when you say "tribal," it often brings to mind uncivilized primitive tribes, but in reality, it was not like that here—they were not backward.
It could even be said that because of the abundant resources and the sparse population, even with few people involved in production, they could still guarantee a decent living standard... as long as you went outside, you could hunt prey, pick fruits, and gather grains.
