Chapter 25 - The Lights We Never Turned Off

The Morning light poured gently through the frost-laced windows of Kenji's house, casting soft gold across the wooden floors. The scent of cinnamon and baked apples drifted from the kitchen, where Nana hummed quietly to herself, placing a tray of warm cookies onto the counter. Somewhere down the hall, someone was tuning a guitar softly, tentatively while the sound of wrapping paper being torn and rewrapped echoed from another room.

The houses had never looked brighter. Strings of golden lights lined the corridor walls, while paper snowflakes danced from the ceiling like they'd always belonged there. A gentle warmth pulsed near the doors, not just from the heaters, but from the laughter, the chatter, the music echoing off the high walls. The Christmas Festival had begun.

Near the corner of the living room stood a decorated tree, shimmering in silver and red, its base piled with neatly wrapped presents. The gift exchange was waiting to begin, but Axel lingered at the doorway, one hand adjusting the scarf around his neck.

He smiled faintly at the scene behind him Kenji carefully placing a gift under the tree, Nana wiping flour from her cheek with a grin, the quiet hum of life wrapping the house in comfort. But something in him itched to step outside, to feel the air, to walk into the world that waited beyond.

With a final glance back ,not out of hesitation, but something more like silent gratitude , Axel opened the front door and stepped out.

And the world was beautiful.

"Hey ,Brother Kenji ! I'll see you and Nanako Sis later again Okay!" he said before leaving. Kenji wore santa cap and Nanako waved at him warmly "Okay !,We will meet you at the mall ! , you have to drop by here after that Okay!" Kenji replied as Nanako gave Axel a red scarf and pet him. Axel Thanked her with a warm smile and left .

It had been a few weeks since the winter solstice trip. The winter break had started, but it didn't slow down time for anyone.

The town square near the mall was bustling earlier that week vendors selling candied nuts, couples skating across the outdoor rink, a towering Christmas tree reflecting off the glass walls of the shops nearby. The streets bustle with gentle energy; there's excitement in the air, but it's calm, composed, with the usual Japanese elegance.

Along the main roads, small bakeries display their seasonal treats: fluffy strawberry shortcakes layered with fresh cream, delicate chocolate yule logs, and limited-edition mochi-wrapped sweets adorned with tiny holly decorations. The scent of fresh bread, sweet pastries, and roasted chestnuts from corner stalls blend into a heartwarming aroma. Storefronts are dressed in twinkling lights, subtle and tasteful wreaths tied with red and gold ribbons, miniature LED trees, and animatronic Santas waving politely from inside displays.

At intersections, J-pop renditions of Christmas classics echo gently from loudspeakers. It's not loud, just present enough to bring a smile as people pass by. Schoolgirls in scarves giggle as they pose beside themed photo booths. Couples stroll hand-in-hand, stopping at food stands to share hot crepes or sip on festive drinks topped with whipped cream and tiny marshmallows.

In the malls, the atmosphere feels dreamlike. Escalators carry shoppers between floors decked with silver garlands and oversized ornaments. Department stores hold holiday sales, their entrances flanked by towering Christmas trees with color-coded themes blue and white for elegance, red and gold for warmth, soft pastels for whimsy. Employees greet every customer with practiced cheer, handing out small candy canes or flyers folded into stars.

Cafés run special menus, peppermint matcha lattes, seasonal parfaits with edible snowflakes, and warm buttered toast with sweet bean paste shaped like reindeer. Children gather near designated corners where storytellers or performers in elf costumes entertain with music, origami, and smiles.

By mid-afternoon, the sunlight begins to dim slightly, casting a subtle pink tone across the tiled streets. People slow down, resting with friends or family in the open seating areas outside shops, many sharing laughter and stories. And though Christmas isn't a national holiday, it somehow still feels like one of soft joy, quiet connection, and warm gestures wrapped in ribbons and lights.

By the time the sun slipped behind the horizon, the city had taken on an entirely new shape. Daylight softened into amber shadows, and the streets of Tokyo shimmered with quiet celebration. Strings of lights twinkled overhead like stars drawn close, and laughter drifted from shops, cafés, and cozy corners of the plazas. The energy shifted not louder, but more magical.

Emi walked beside Axel through the heart of the shopping district, her gloved hand brushing against his now and then. She wasn't sure if it was accidental anymore or if either of them even minded. She carried a small paper bag, sealed with ribbon. Inside it was a gift she'd hesitated over for days, and a tiny card she'd rewritten three times.

The plaza ahead was lit by a towering Christmas tree, its gold and crimson ornaments catching the glow of the streetlamps.

The streets were busier now. Families wrapped in coats, teens with shopping bags, couples with linked pinkies all moved with a sense of anticipation. Kyomi adjusted her scarf, her breath visible as she stepped out from a boutique, her phone buzzing with a message: "Meet near the big tree by 5?" – Ito.

She smiled, her pace quickening. Around her, the world glowed.

Emi and Axel had been browsing a bookstore nearby, quietly laughing over a collection of oddly translated Christmas cards. Emi clutched a small, neatly wrapped gift close to her chest as they stepped out. "They're probably already at the tree," Axel said, looking toward the center of the plaza. Emi nodded, her expression soft and filled with that quiet kind of happiness.

At the same time, Hikaru emerged from the café across the street, a coffee in hand, having spent the afternoon composing a melody in his notebook, inspired by the holiday noise and warmth around him. Morn had just returned from the arcade with a gift bag in one hand, waving when he spotted Axel across the crowd.

The plaza was the heart of the evening.

In the center stood a grand Christmas tree, reaching nearly three stories high, its ornaments shimmering under a net of tiny golden lights. The paths were filled with layers of snow , and the air carried that electric crispness that felt like it could snow again at any moment. Around the base of the tree were benches, market stalls.

Kyomi arrived first, her cheeks flushed from the cold, just as Ito jogged up beside her, holding two cups of hot cocoa. "It's sweeter than last time," he said, handing her one. She raised an eyebrow. "Smells like engine oil again?" she teased. He smirked. "Only a little."

The town square glowed under a soft, silvery snowfall. The Winter Festival had begun.

The music hummed with energy. Children ran with paper lanterns, elders sipped warm tea, and couples wandered with mittens barely touching. Somewhere between the laughter and the soft crunch of snow, a small Kyomi and Ito lingered near a cocoa stall.

"Guess who forgot their gloves," Ito said, shivering.

Kyomi raised a brow. "Guess who's always forgetting stuff."

He blinked. "Are you offering yours?"

She shrugged off her gloves and tossed it to him with a smirk. "Smells like engine oil, though."

Ito held it up dramatically. "My favorite brand."

Kyomi rolled her eyes, but she was smiling too.

One by one, their friends gathered ,Axel, Emi, Kyomi, Ito, even a few classmates they hadn't expected. Bags filled with small wrapped gifts exchanged hands, each person offering something thoughtful, handmade, or silly. Laughter rang out, some louder than others, some just quiet chuckles shared between glances.

A small portable speaker played soft instrumentals. Haru pulled Emi aside, whispering something that made her blush and then she stood up, and played a song that she sang earlier.

It was "Gravity Games" but this time, stripped down, slowed slightly. A soft acoustic version that made Kyomi glance at Ito, then smile. Emi's voice wrapped around the group like a ribbon. She added a final verse, her eyes searching the little crowd.

> "And when the lights begin to fade,

And the world feels far away

Somehow, among these songs and names,

I think I found home again."

Axel, just beside the tree, looked up and met Emi's eyes.

As the crowd began exchanging gifts kyomi, Ito , Haru all started exchanging gifts. Meanwhile Axel handed Emi a small, rectangular box. She tilted her head, curious.

"Open it," he said, avoiding her eyes.

Inside was a tiny, silver treble clef pendant minimal, simple, but beautiful. Along with a hand drawn painting of Emi singing with her piano.Emi clutched it to her chest.

"I saw the pendant in the window at Polaris Mall," Axel admitted. "Weeks ago. I thought… maybe you'd like it."

" They reminded me of your songs, and so I tried to paint you in these canvas" he added, almost embarrassed.

Emi's voice caught. "I love it."

"Thank you," she whispered. "It's perfect."

Emi looked at it for a long time, then reached into her paper bag.

"This one's yours," she said softly, handing him a slim, carefully wrapped package with a pink ribbon and hand written cards. he opened it to find a pair of earbuds painted in soft gradients, seven shades from twilight blue to sunrise pink and a folded page of sheet music no lyrics, just a delicate melody. Handwritten in pencil: "To the one who always listens."

"Thank you" he whispered as they walked side by side .

The snow fell quietly.

"I didn't know you could paint like that," she said, fiddling with the edge of her scarf.

"I didn't know you could write music like that," he replied.

She gave him a sideways glance. "You make me feel like I can."

He smiled.

They wandered toward the edge of the square, where the chapel bells chimed. Something fluttered on the bench an envelope curled with frost. Axel picked it up, staring.

Kenji's name was scrawled on the back. Emi leaned in as he opened it.

Inside: a letter from Sachiko. Dated a winter long ago.

Axel's eyes didn't move from the words, but Emi didn't press. She simply stood next to him, waiting. The snow continued falling gently, like a memory unfolding.

Later,Just after meeting Kenji and Nanako , Axel slipped the new headphones over his ears. Emi shared the other side.

They sat in silence on the bench beneath the trees, along with Ito ,Kyomi watching the glow and feeling the music fill the space between them. Kenji and Nanako in their own world as they watch over Axeand Emil from a distance.

"I think," Emi said softly, her voice almost lost in the wind, "I found home again."

Axel looked at her, heart full.

He nodded. "Me too."

it was unmistakably Christmas.

The snow continued fell in silence, but inside their headphones, the world sang. And for the first time in a long while, Axel felt like the lights inside him had never really gone out.
