The fire crackled softly in the center of our mismatched camp, throwing golden light across the clearing. The tents were finally up—barely. Zion had wrestled with his like it insulted his ancestors. Grace ended up doing most of the work while Dani laughed herself into tears. Calyx and Nyra had worked quietly, efficient and fast, while Azriel and I had bickered the whole time about which pole went where—until he shut me up with a kiss I definitely didn't ask for but absolutely needed.
Now, we were all sitting around the fire on logs, crates, or straight-up the grass. Grace had tucked herself beside Zion, who was eating trail mix like he was trying to win a speed-eating contest. Dani sat cross-legged beside Nyra and Calyx, the three of them still catching up, absorbing every detail of Amadeus and the twisted vision he was spreading—freedom, power, acceptance…all laced in manipulation.
