Seven Sins System Chapter 428. Should I Take Her To My Realm?
I leaned back in my chair, waiting for anyone who might come to the infirmary. The morning was still early, and classes hadn't started yet. The quietness of the campus at this hour was almost soothing, a calm before the daily storm of activities. I couldn't use my tentacles here, not in a place where anyone could walk in at any moment. So, I had to act like a normal infirmary doctor for a while.
With nothing pressing to do, I took out my phone and started scrolling through the news. The articles were dull, filled with mundane details of the mortal world.
Political squabbles, economic updates, celebrity gossip—none of it held any relevance for me. It was all so insignificant compared to the grander schemes and conflicts I was used to dealing with.
I put down the phone with a sigh and pulled out a book from my bag. It was a thick volume on human anatomy, something I had picked up out of necessity rather than interest. I started flipping through the pages, skimming the diagrams and descriptions. Despite the detailed illustrations and thorough explanations, I found nothing new or engaging. I had already memorized all this information long ago. The intricacies of the human body, while fascinating to some, were mundane to me now.
My mind began to wander as I absentmindedly turned the pages.
Clack!
The sound of the door opening made me lower the book in my hand and lift my head toward the source of the noise. There stood Penelope, lingering by the doorway with her eyes narrowed suspiciously at me.
Instead of entering the room right away, she chose to scrutinize me from a distance, a list clutched in her hand. I guessed it was my schedule, as usual.
I plastered on my formal smile, reminding myself to act normally. "Morning," I greeted her, keeping my tone light and casual.
Penelope didn't respond to my greeting. Instead, she approached me quickly, her movements sharp and decisive. Before I could react, she leaned in, her hand grabbing the back of my head, fingers tangling in my hair as she pulled me toward her. Her face was inches from mine, her breath warm against my skin. She stopped just shy of my neck, her nose almost brushing my skin.
'Ah... here we go again,' I thought, resigned. I could already predict what she was about to do.
Penelope leaned in closer, inhaling my scent slowly, her breath warm against my skin. She took her time, drawing in the air around me as if she could extract some hidden truth from my very essence. I remained still, not reacting to her invasive actions. I knew better than to move unless she actually tried to sink her fangs into me and take my blood.
Penelope's behavior, though strange, wasn't entirely unfounded. She had always been able to sense the subtle differences between me and my double, even if she couldn't pinpoint exactly what those differences were. It was an inherited trait, her mother's sharpness and keen senses manifesting strongly in her. I couldn't blame her for her suspicion, nor for why her twin, Katrina, always assigned her as the investigator in delicate matters.
"Miss Penelope," I said, my voice steady despite the close proximity, "you shouldn't do this every time you deliver the schedule to me."
Her response was a slight narrowing of her eyes, but she didn't pull away immediately. She took one last, deliberate inhale before finally straightening up, releasing her grip on the back of my head. There was a moment of silence as she stepped back, her expression unreadable.
She tilted her head, her eyes narrowing even further. "I see you are the real one," she said with a smirk, her tone almost teasing.
I let out a low chuckle, trying to deflect her suspicion with humor. "You talk as if someone replaced me for the last few days," I said, keeping my tone light and joking.
She scoffed, clearly not buying my act. "Isn't it indeed like that?" she replied without a moment's hesitation, her confidence unwavering.
'Nice confidence,' I thought, admiring her boldness despite the discomfort it caused. Penelope was sharp, too sharp sometimes. She had an instinct for sniffing out the truth, and it was both a blessing and a curse in situations like this.
"You surely have a good sense of humor," I said, maintaining my light tone. My eyes locked onto hers, trying to gauge how much she really knew or suspected.
She straightened her back without breaking her gaze at me. "Yeah, a good sense of humor," she repeated my words in a displeased tone. She handed me the list, her movements brisk and efficient. "Here's your schedule for the day, Dr. Allen," she said, her tone formal but laced with an underlying tension. Penelope's smirk widened slightly, but she didn't push further, at least not verbally.
"Thank you," I replied, taking the list from her. I glanced over it briefly, noting the usual assortment of appointments and duties.
Penelope lingered for a moment longer, her eyes still studying me intently. I met her gaze, keeping my expression neutral.
"Just don't forget our dinner invitation. My mother wants to see you," Penelope reminded me, her voice a mix of formality and something warmer, perhaps familial obligation.
"Okay," I replied with a smile, trying to keep my tone casual.
With that, she left the room, her steps brisk and purposeful. I took a deep breath and watched her go, a smirk curling on my lips as I considered her parting words. "Should I take her to my realm too?" I muttered under my breath, entertained by the sudden, intriguing idea.
I pondered the possibility, turning it over in my mind. It was tempting, in a way. Penelope was sharp, resourceful, and undeniably interesting.
