"Are you excited?" Trina asked the moment we were alone in my room.
I glanced at her through the mirror, my brush stilled mid-stroke as I fixed the stray strands of my hair. "Well, this banquet is being held to welcome Owen's pack. As the daughter of the head of this household, I'm expected to be the perfect hostess. They're our guests, after all."
It wasn't exactly an answer to her question, but it was the truth, at least, the part I was willing to say out loud.
I stared at my reflection, trying to find something familiar in the girl looking back at me. The elegant dress I had chosen tonight wasn't new—none of my wardrobe was. Everything in the city had been ruined, and ever since the destruction of Zenith, my parents had stopped traveling abroad. The disaster changed everything. Still, I had dresses lined up in my closet that I'd never worn, untouched luxuries from a life that now felt like someone else's.
