Just as Mia Anderson pushed open the door, she heard Mary Scott's panicked shout of "No," a tone of alarm she had never heard from her before. Stunned, she froze with one foot in the doorway, anxiously asking, "Mary, what's wrong?"
After asking, Mia restrained her impulse to rush in and waited for Mary to speak.
Realizing she had overreacted, Mary was extremely embarrassed but had no choice but to face the situation. She nudged the man holding her, cleared her throat to recover from her shrill shout, and said, "Could you step out for a moment? I'll be right out."
Mia was bewildered. Back when they were poor, they had shared a bed, so she had seen everything. Why was Mary so nervous today? It didn't make sense.
Though Mia obediently backed out of Mary's room, her mind raced with wild thoughts. The more she thought about it, the more something seemed off, and she muttered, "Something's definitely wrong!"
